Some films receive critical acclaim upon release, only to fade from public discourse, resurfacing years later when audiences finally take the time to appreciate them. This phenomenon is particularly common with prestige dramas from the early 2000s, which often get overshadowed by more commercially successful blockbusters released in the same timeframe.

This is precisely what happened with a specific naval epic that debuted in theaters back in 2003, making its current resurgence all the more gratifying for devoted fans. Currently, it ranks fourth on Apple TV’s daily Top 10 Movies chart, nestled between ‘The Dink’ and ‘F1’, and has maintained a position on that chart for 27 consecutive days.

The film in question is ‘Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World’, directed by Peter Weir and featuring Russell Crowe as Captain Jack Aubrey. Its renewed popularity has been steadily growing across various platforms throughout the year. As reported by MovieWeb, the film’s inclusion in Apple TV’s expanded selection of classic, non-original programming has propelled it into the platform’s most-watched titles in the U.S. since early September.

This isn’t the first streaming service where the film has made waves. In November, ‘Master and Commander’ secured the seventh spot on HBO Max’s global Top 10 movies list, according to ScreenRant, making it into the top 10 across 14 countries that week, with particularly strong viewership in Southeastern Europe and the Balkans.

Much of this renewed interest stems from the film’s initial overshadowing. Released just weeks before ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ dominated the box office, the naval epic failed to garner the attention many believed it deserved, despite its impressive production budget that recreated period ships with groundbreaking visual effects for its time, as noted by Collider.

Critical reception, however, painted a different picture from the outset. The film boasts an 85% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside an 80% audience score, and it received ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, ultimately winning two Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Sound Editing.

This impressive pedigree has helped the film establish a reputation over time as one of the finest historical adventures of the twenty-first century. ScreenRant previously hailed it as the best tactical military movie ever made, praising its authentic depiction of naval warfare and intelligent battlefield communication. Director Peter Weir, a six-time Oscar nominee known for ‘Dead Poets Society’ and ‘The Truman Show’, applied the same meticulous, character-driven approach that characterized much of his earlier work.

With its steady rise across HBO Max, Disney+, and now Apple TV, ‘Master and Commander’ has spent much of 2026 demonstrating that exceptional filmmaking eventually finds its audience, even if it takes over two decades to do so. For a film that was once eclipsed by hobbits and wizards, this journey to recognition is indeed a satisfying one.
