The upcoming live-action ‘Masters of the Universe’ is set to hit theaters soon, but director Travis Knight is already looking ahead. In a recent roundtable interview reported by ScreenRant, Knight shared his thoughts on what he would like to explore in a potential sequel, should the first film achieve success.

Scheduled for release on June 5, 2026, the movie follows Prince Adam as he transforms into He-Man and battles to save Eternia from Skeletor. The cast features Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, along with a talented ensemble bringing the world of Eternia to life.

Despite the film not being released yet, Knight has already envisioned where the story could go next. He expressed a desire to delve deeper into Adam’s character development after he fully embraces his role as He-Man. Additionally, he is keen to explore how the relationships in the narrative evolve following the significant events of the first movie.

During the interview, Knight remarked, “I think about what happens next for Adam. Where’s the next stage of his life take him now that he’s properly He-Man? What does that mean?”

He emphasized that the core of the story transcends mere action or battles, focusing instead on the relationships among the characters. Knight noted that any future narrative would hinge on how these relationships develop after the initial film’s events.

The director candidly acknowledged that a sequel is not guaranteed. According to the same ScreenRant report, Knight clarified that the future of the franchise is contingent on audience reception and box office performance. He stated that the filmmakers do not have control over this outcome.

“Ultimately, this stuff is not in our hands. So as much as we would like to tell more of these stories, if the world doesn’t want them, we won’t tell them. But if the world demands more of them, we’d be very lucky to be able to tell more stories in this universe,” Knight explained.

Before getting too far ahead, Knight mentioned that his primary focus remains on the first film. He shared that when he began working on the project, he approached it as if it might be his only opportunity to create a ‘Masters of the Universe’ movie. Consequently, he aimed to invest everything he had into it.

He described the film as a product of full commitment from the cast and crew. Knight expressed pride in the emotional depth of the story and the heart behind the action. His goal was to present a meaningful interpretation of Eternia that could stand on its own, even without sequels.

The story of ‘Masters of the Universe’ originates from the long-standing Mattel franchise that began in the 1980s. It has been adapted into various forms, including cartoons, comics, and a previous live-action film in 1987, which starred Dolph Lundgren and became a cult classic despite mixed reviews at the time.

This new adaptation aims to revitalize the franchise with a contemporary perspective. With production led by Amazon MGM Studios and a large ensemble cast, the film is positioned as a significant fantasy release for 2026.

If the movie performs well, Knight already has a clear vision for the sequel. He intends to delve deeper into Adam’s journey as He-Man and examine how his transformation into a hero impacts his relationships and responsibilities. For now, however, everything hinges on audience reactions when the film finally debuts in theaters.
