‘Masters of the Universe’ Official Prime Video Release Date Announced
Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel are set to bring ‘Masters of the Universe’ to streaming sooner than anticipated. The live-action He-Man adventure will officially debut on Prime Video on Wednesday, July 22, allowing fans to enjoy the film at home just 47 days after its theatrical release.
This announcement follows a relatively swift transition from theaters to streaming. Although the film aimed to revitalize the beloved franchise, its box office performance fell short of expectations. Reports indicate that ‘Masters of the Universe’ grossed approximately $29.4 million during its domestic opening weekend, ultimately totaling around $64.6 million in North America and $113.3 million globally.
With a reported production budget of about $170 million, the theatrical results were disappointing, despite the He-Man brand’s popularity. Audience reactions were mixed, reflected in a B CinemaScore and a 67% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Nonetheless, the project marked a significant effort to revive the classic property. Development for the movie spanned nearly two decades, with producers working for around 18 years to create a new adaptation of the world first introduced through Mattel’s iconic toy line and the animated series that captivated audiences in the 1980s.
The new film also aimed to outshine the previous live-action adaptation, 1987’s ‘Masters of the Universe,’ which featured Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. This time, Amazon MGM and Mattel focused on a younger cast and a grander fantasy adventure designed to introduce Eternia to a new generation.
Nicholas Galitzine, known for Prime Video’s ‘Red, White & Royal Blue,’ stars as Prince Adam, the hero who eventually becomes He-Man. The narrative follows Adam after a 15-year separation from his home world of Eternia. When the legendary Sword of Power leads him back, he discovers that his family and kingdom face a grave threat from Skeletor, portrayed by Jared Leto.
To thwart Skeletor and safeguard Eternia, Adam must reconnect with allies, including Teela, played by Camila Mendes, and Duncan, also known as Man-At-Arms, played by Idris Elba. This journey compels Adam to embrace his true identity and become He-Man, the legendary warrior known as the most powerful man in the universe.

The screenplay was crafted by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and Dave Callaham, based on a story developed by Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, Alex Litvak, and Michael Finch. The film was produced by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner, and DeVon Franklin.
With its upcoming Prime Video release, ‘Masters of the Universe’ now has a chance to reach a broader audience. Streaming could enable more fans, particularly those who grew up with He-Man or younger viewers discovering the franchise for the first time, to experience this new version of Eternia from the comfort of their homes.
