Matt Damon, Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway Star in New Look at ‘The Odyssey’
A new glimpse of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic ‘The Odyssey’ has excited fans, showcasing one of the most ambitious films of his career. Fresh images released by Empire feature Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Anne Hathaway in this eagerly awaited adaptation of Homer’s timeless Greek tale.
The film aims to bring one of history’s oldest and most renowned stories to the big screen, following Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he endeavors to return home after the Trojan War. Throughout his journey, he confronts perilous challenges, enigmatic creatures, and formidable forces while striving to reunite with his wife, Penelope.
Empire’s latest images provide another look at the film’s stellar cast, with Damon portraying Odysseus and Hathaway as Penelope. Tom Holland also joins a remarkable ensemble that includes Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.
Written and directed by Nolan, known for his works like ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Inception’, and ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy, ‘The Odyssey’ is produced alongside his wife Emma Thomas through their production company, Syncopy.
This movie is described as a realistic interpretation of Greek mythology, diverging from the traditional fantasy adventure. Nolan reportedly drew inspiration from Emily Wilson’s 2017 translation of ‘Homer’s Odyssey’ and the iconic visual effects of Ray Harryhausen, who helped shape classic fantasy cinema.
The production of ‘The Odyssey’ has been extensive, with filming occurring in various locations, including Greece, Italy, Morocco, Iceland, Scotland, Malta, Western Sahara, and Los Angeles. Notably, this film will be Nolan’s first shot entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras, reinforcing his dedication to large-scale filmmaking.
With a reported budget of approximately $250 million, ‘The Odyssey’ stands among Nolan’s most expensive projects to date. Its grand scale, diverse locations, and practical filmmaking methods have already positioned it as one of the most anticipated releases.
The narrative will delve into many iconic moments from Homer’s original epic, featuring Odysseus’ encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, treacherous sirens, and the elusive nymph Calypso. At its heart, however, lies a simple tale of a man seeking to return to the person and place he cherishes.
The cast has generated significant buzz among movie enthusiasts. Damon’s role as Odysseus presents a new challenge for the actor, while Holland and the rest of the ensemble add considerable star power to Nolan’s historical adventure.
Universal Pictures is set to release ‘The Odyssey’ in theaters on July 17. The film will be available in IMAX and other premium formats, allowing audiences to experience Nolan’s latest work on the largest screens possible.
With its legendary source material, impressive cast, and one of Hollywood’s most esteemed directors at the helm, ‘The Odyssey’ is poised to be one of the most discussed films of 2026.
