Maya Hawke Joins the Cast of ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ as Wiress
Maya Hawke is stepping into the world of Panem! The Stranger Things star has officially joined the cast of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Lionsgate’s latest adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling book. In the movie, Hawke will take on the role of Wiress, a former Hunger Games champion who later becomes a mentor for District 12.
Maya Hawke will be in good company as she joins a star-studded cast. Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak are set to play Haymitch Abernathy and Lenore Dove Baird. Other notable actors include Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is based on Suzanne Collins’ new book, which was released on March 18. The story goes back 24 years before the original Hunger Games series. It starts with the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.
This time, there’s a dangerous twist: 48 tributes (double the usual number) will be sent into the arena. The focus is on 16-year-old Haymitch, a clever and resourceful boy from District 12, who unexpectedly finds himself chosen for these deadly games.
The film is directed by Francis Lawrence, who previously worked on other Hunger Games movies. The script is written by Billy Ray, with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson producing under Color Force. The film is set to be released on November 20, 2026.
