MCU’s ‘Nova’ Series Receives Major Update After Years of Anticipation
Marvel Studios has been hinting at the arrival of one of its most sought-after cosmic heroes for years, and the prolonged wait has led many fans to lose hope in the project. However, this long-anticipated series is finally showing signs of progress, and the latest update features a familiar name.
Kevin Feige first brought up the character’s potential back in 2018, and the journey to bring Nova to screens has faced numerous challenges since then. The project has shifted between formats and writers over the years, hitting a significant roadblock in February 2025 when Marvel Studios halted development on the series, along with several other Disney+ projects.
Now, as per the Writers Guild of America West directory, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Loki’ writer Michael Waldron has joined the Nova series as a writer for the 2026 to 2027 season, indicating that the long-delayed project has quietly resumed its development. The listing places Nova at the forefront of Waldron’s television credits, ahead of works like ‘Chad Powers’, ‘Loki’, ‘Heels’, and ‘Rick and Morty’.
Waldron’s involvement is significant, considering his growing influence within the MCU in recent years. He was the head writer for the first season of ‘Loki’, penned ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, and has become one of Marvel’s key writers, co-writing both ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and the upcoming ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ alongside Stephen McFeely.
Interestingly, Waldron has previously expressed a keen interest in bringing Nova to life, mentioning on the Bingeworthy podcast that he envisioned Glen Powell as his choice for Richard Rider. Given that Waldron and Powell have previously collaborated on the Hulu comedy series ‘Chad Powers’, this pairing would not be surprising if it materializes.
It remains uncertain what specific role Waldron will assume in the project, as the WGA directory does not specify a title, and he has previously worked in various capacities including writer, producer, showrunner, and executive producer. Ed Bernero, a veteran of ‘Criminal Minds’, who was brought on as showrunner in late 2024, appears to still be attached, but how the two will share creative responsibilities is yet to be determined.
Nova has faced a particularly tumultuous development history, even by Marvel Television standards. Initially conceived as a feature film in 2022 with ‘Moon Knight’ writer Sabir Pirzada attached, it transitioned into a television series the following year. The project experienced further delays as Marvel restructured its streaming plans, eventually returning to active development in late 2024 before being paused again just months later.
Previous reports suggested that Bernero’s version of the story would introduce the classic Marvel villain Annihilus, setting the character against Richard Rider and a young team of Nova Corps members as they strive to rebuild after Thanos’s assault on Xandar. Whether Waldron’s involvement indicates a shift in direction or simply a refinement of existing scripts remains to be seen.
Waldron’s connection to yet another major Marvel project is unsurprising for those who have followed his swift rise within the studio, despite some criticism from fans regarding the so-called Rick and Morty writers room era of Marvel Television. Feige has evidently continued to place considerable trust in him, having also enlisted him for an unmade Star Wars film in the past.
Given the timing of this update, there is a strong possibility that Marvel will use next week’s San Diego Comic Con panel to officially clarify the status of Nova, especially as the studio prepares to make waves around ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. For now, fans finally have a legitimate reason to believe that the Human Rocket might actually make it to screens after all these years.
