Meet Kyle McManus, the CIA Officer by Joe’s Side Since ‘Lioness’ Began
Espionage dramas thrive on the trust established between operatives who have faced numerous dangerous missions together, allowing them to anticipate each other’s thoughts. In Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Lioness,’ few relationships exemplify this dynamic as effectively as that between Joe McNamara and one of her longest-serving CIA colleagues.
Zoe Saldaña’s Joe McNamara has been the anchor of ‘Lioness’ since its premiere, leading the CIA’s covert Lioness program as a fearless and strategic station chief. While she is supported by a rotating cast of operatives and CIA officials, few characters have been as consistently present in her orbit as Kyle.
Kyle McManus, portrayed by actor Thad Luckinbill, is a CIA case officer and one of Joe’s oldest friends, having collaborated with her for years throughout the show’s ongoing missions. Described as confident and strategic, Kyle is known for taking calculated risks, often coordinating complex field operations and managing intelligence gathering while working closely with Joe and the Lioness quick reaction force.
This level of on-the-ground trust makes him a unique figure within the ensemble. Kyle is characterized as the daring “cowboy” extraction expert of the group, someone who dives headfirst into the most perilous rescue operations, frequently taking significant risks that usually pay off despite the inherent dangers.
Kyle was not always a series regular. Luckinbill first appeared in ‘Lioness’ during its debut season, but his role expanded significantly by Season 2, when he was officially promoted to a series regular, continuing to portray the CIA officer.
This elevated presence has continued into Season 3, where Kyle remains one of the familiar faces working alongside Joe, Kaitlyn Meade, and the rest of the Lioness quick reaction force. Years of collaboration in the field have fostered an instinctive understanding between Kyle and Joe, enabling them to navigate some of the show’s most high-stakes operations with the kind of shorthand that only longtime partners develop.
Luckinbill has shared his experiences returning to the role across multiple seasons, including reflections on the show’s unexpected moments behind the scenes. He revealed that creator Taylor Sheridan himself takes on an acting role in Season 3, having previously made a brief cameo as CIA officer Cody Spears back in Season 2.

Luckinbill was born on April 24, 1975, in Oklahoma, and has established a steady career in television and film since breaking into the industry in 1999 with a recurring role on the series ‘Undressed.’ He has since appeared in over forty projects, ranging from war dramas like ’12 Strong’ and ‘Only the Brave’ to the action thriller ‘Sicario.’
Many viewers may recognize Luckinbill from his long-running role as JT Hellstrom on the daytime soap opera ‘The Young and the Restless.’ Beyond acting, he has also built a notable career as a producer, with credits including the Oscar-winning musical ‘La La Land.’
With ‘Lioness’ Season 3 now streaming on Paramount+, Kyle McManus continues to be a vital link connecting Joe’s covert missions and the broader CIA operations surrounding her. As the season unfolds with high-stakes storylines involving Joe’s abduction and the aftermath of Operation Treasure, Kyle’s steady presence and field expertise are likely to remain central to whatever lies ahead for the Lioness team.
