Jane Austen’s most underrated daughter is finally stepping into the limelight. ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ is set to be one of the most anticipated British period dramas in recent years, presenting a fresh and emotionally resonant reimagining of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ through the perspective of Mary Bennet, the bookish middle sibling who has long been overlooked. The series debuted on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in March 2026, followed by its American release on BritBox in May 2026.

This ten-part drama is produced by Bad Wolf for BBC One, with Sony Pictures Television holding the global distribution rights. Based on the novel by Janice Hadlow, the demand for untold stories like this has never been greater. For enthusiasts of rich Regency storytelling with genuine character development, this series is a must-watch.

Ella Bruccoleri, recognized for her roles in ‘Call the Midwife’ and ‘Bridgerton,’ takes the lead as Mary Bennet. This marks her first time as the primary character, and she has embraced the role with impressive conviction. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bruccoleri described the series as more than just a romance, stating, “I think it’s a love story between Mary and herself.”

The narrative follows Mary as she breaks free from her sisters’ shadows to discover her true self, embarking on a journey from Meryton to London and the Lake District, where her quest for independence leads to an unexpected love story set in Regency-era England.

This character arc allows Bruccoleri to present a genuinely surprising take on a character often relegated to comic relief in previous adaptations.

Bruccoleri expressed her admiration for Jane Austen’s writing, noting, “I think she has her finger on that pulse so skillfully, and does it in such a way there’s loads of levity in it, but it’s this dry wit that Jane Austen nails.” This level of engagement with the source material indicates a performance that is definitely worth watching.

The supporting cast surrounding Bruccoleri is equally impressive. Richard E. Grant, known for ‘Withnail and I’ and ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’, along with Ruth Jones, beloved for ‘Gavin and Stacey’ and ‘Stella’, co-star as Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Their pairing brings warmth and sharp comedic instincts to two of Austen’s most iconic parental figures, enhancing the material significantly.

The broader cast includes Indira Varma as Mrs. Gardiner, Richard Coyle as Mr. Gardiner, Dónal Finn as Mr. Hayward, Varada Sethu as Ann Baxter, Tanya Reynolds as Miss Caroline Bingley, and Poppy Gilbert as Elizabeth Bennet. Maddie Close, Molly Wright, and Grace Hogg-Robinson complete the Bennet sisters as Jane, Kitty, and Lydia, respectively.

In a delightful nod to continuity, TV Insider exclusively revealed that Lucy Briers, who portrayed Mary Bennet in PBS’s acclaimed 1995 adaptation of ‘Pride and Prejudice’, now plays Mary’s confidante, Mrs. Hill, in ‘The Other Bennet Sister’. This clever casting choice is a treat for longtime Austen fans.

The series is adapted by Sarah Quintrell, with additional writing by Maddie Dai, and is directed by Jennifer Sheridan and Asim Abbasi. Quintrell’s scripts have been years in the making, shaped by a deep understanding of what makes Mary Bennet a compelling heroine rather than just a punchline.

Quintrell has shared that observing her own children navigate their teenage years reminded her of the intensity of social hierarchies, which significantly influenced her portrayal of Mary’s inner life.

Produced by John Pocock, the executive producers include Kate Crowther, Becca Kinder, and Jane Tranter for Bad Wolf, Rebecca Ferguson for the BBC, and Jess O’Riordan, Robert Schildhouse, and Stephen Nye for BritBox, along with Sarah Quintrell and Janice Hadlow herself. The involvement of the original novelist as an executive producer lends the adaptation a unique creative integrity.

Executive producer Jane Tranter has noted that the team has been working on ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ for many years, with Hadlow’s brilliantly crafted characters evolving in their imaginations as Quintrell developed the scripts. Tranter described the assembled group as the ensemble cast of their dreams, a sentiment that feels entirely justified.

‘The Other Bennet Sister’ is produced by Bad Wolf, the company behind ‘Industry’ and ‘Doctor Who’. Bad Wolf has become one of the most exciting players in British television drama, and this project marks a significant venture into beloved literary territory. The series was filmed in Wales and is a co-production between the BBC and BritBox.

The premiere episode aired at 8pm on Sunday, March 15 on BBC One, with the second episode following at 8:30pm, and subsequent episodes airing in the same paired pattern over the following weeks. BritBox launched the series in the US on May 6, 2026, with the first three episodes available immediately, followed by a weekly rollout until June 24, 2026.

Bad Wolf founder Jane Tranter has also revealed that the company is exploring other overlooked Jane Austen characters for future projects, indicating that ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ may be just the beginning of a larger endeavor. The response from audiences and critics will ultimately determine how far this ambition can reach.

With such a talented cast, a dedicated creative team, and a heroine finally receiving her due, the pressing question remains: which overlooked Austen character do you hope will receive similar treatment next?
