Typically, films experience a gradual decline in box office performance as their theatrical runs progress. However, ‘Michael’ is defying expectations, continuing to generate impressive numbers even after eleven weekends in theaters, prompting box office analysts to monitor its performance closely.

This past weekend, the Michael Jackson biopic brought in an additional $7.24 million globally. While this figure might be modest for a new release, it represents a remarkable hold for a film that has been screening for months. Notably, the international market has shown unexpected strength at this stage of its run.

Japan and Russia contributed significantly to this weekend’s total, accounting for $4.7 million, with their combined earnings now reaching $56.6 million and still increasing. Such late-stage contributions from these regions are uncommon for films, especially for one nearing the billion-dollar milestone.

With these figures, ‘Michael’ has reached a global total of $991.4 million, as reported by Box Office Mojo, positioning it on the brink of becoming the first biopic to surpass the billion-dollar mark. The film has accumulated $371.2 million domestically and $620.1 million internationally.

Japan and Russia joined the film’s release schedule later than most regions, providing ‘Michael’ with a much-needed boost as earlier markets began to slow down. In Japan, the film has emerged as one of the top Hollywood releases of the year, recently ranking as the third highest-grossing Hollywood film in the country, while Russia continues to contribute steadily to the box office.

This late-arriving momentum has led analysts to predict that the film could cross the billion-dollar threshold within days rather than weeks. If the current trend continues through the upcoming weekend, ‘Michael’ could achieve this milestone by Sunday. Even if it doesn’t, projections suggest that it will reach this landmark shortly thereafter.

‘Michael’ has already set multiple records this year, surpassing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to become the highest-grossing music biopic and later overtaking ‘Oppenheimer’ to claim the title of the highest-grossing biopic overall. Reaching a billion dollars would place it in uncharted territory for biographical films, regardless of their subject or budget.

The film debuted in April with a record-breaking $217 million global weekend and features Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew, making his acting debut as the iconic singer. Given the significant contributions from Japan and Russia, the countdown to the historic billion-dollar mark appears to be nearing its conclusion.
