Summer 2026 has become one of the busiest box office seasons in recent years, with animated blockbusters and legacy franchises vying for limited screen time across global markets. Japan, in particular, has emerged as a key battleground this year, rewarding films that maintain audience interest over several weeks rather than just securing a strong opening weekend.

The music biopic ‘Michael’ has already surpassed ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to become the highest-grossing music biopic ever, amassing an impressive 911.9 million dollars globally, including 358.6 million dollars domestically and 553.3 million dollars internationally. This remarkable success has made its performance in specific regions, especially in Japan—a market crucial to Jackson’s legacy—worth monitoring closely.

In Japan, the film continues to make headlines. Box office analyst Luiz Fernando reported that despite ‘Toy Story 5’ leading the box office, ‘Michael’ earned an estimated 600,000 dollars on its fifth Friday in Japan, reflecting only a 10.4 percent decline from the previous Friday. This brings its total earnings in the country to 33.2 million dollars.

Japan’s connection to Jackson’s narrative runs deeper than just this release cycle. Historically, the country has exceeded expectations for Jackson-related releases compared to other international markets, a trend that dates back to the Kenny Ortega-directed documentary ‘This Is It,’ which garnered a dedicated audience there in 2009. This pattern seems to be repeating itself, this time competing against a Pixar sequel instead of a quieter awards season.

The film’s global reception has been notably mixed, holding a critics score in the high thirties on Rotten Tomatoes while enjoying an impressive 97 percent audience score on the same platform. This disparity between critics and audience reactions has become a significant part of the film’s narrative, with positive word of mouth clearly driving sustained attendance rather than critical reviews.

Such staying power in its fifth weekend is rare for any film, and Fernando’s tracking indicates that ‘Michael’ is benefiting from overwhelmingly positive word of mouth in Japan. It is currently positioned as the third highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2026 in the country. With this weekend’s figures, the film is on track to surpass ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ for second place among Hollywood titles in Japan this year, with projections for its fifth weekend earnings ranging between 2.8 million and 3.2 million dollars.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, ‘Michael’ carries a production cost close to 200 million dollars, shared between Lionsgate, Universal, and the Michael Jackson estate. The film marks Jaafar Jackson’s acting debut in a role filled with personal and cultural significance, alongside Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Joe and Katherine Jackson, with Miles Teller and Laura Harrier rounding out the supporting cast.

With Japan continuing to defy typical fourth and fifth-weekend drop-offs, ‘Michael’ looks increasingly likely to conclude its theatrical run as one of the most resilient box office stories of the year.
