Music biopics have had a unique relationship with box office success over the years. While a few have emerged as genuine cultural phenomena, the genre has often been overshadowed by superhero films and franchise sequels in terms of box office earnings.

This perception began to shift in April when Antoine Fuqua’s film about Michael Jackson debuted in theaters, accompanied by a hefty budget and a wave of skepticism. Despite a rocky start, the film continued to attract audiences week after week, steadily climbing toward an unprecedented milestone for biopics.

Now, after its twelfth weekend in theaters, ‘Michael’ has officially surpassed the one billion dollar mark at the global box office, making it the first biographical film in history to achieve this feat. This remarkable achievement positions the story of the King of Pop ahead of both ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, earning the title of the highest-grossing biopic ever.

The international box office played a crucial role in this success. ‘Michael’ has generated an estimated 629.8 million dollars overseas across more than 85 markets, with significant contributions from Japan and Russia helping to balance out weaker numbers in regions distracted by the World Cup or those that had already seen the film through digital release.

With a domestic total of 371.8 million dollars in the United States, the film’s global earnings have now officially crossed the billion-dollar threshold. This is particularly impressive considering the film’s production budget was around 200 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive music biopics ever produced.

Director Antoine Fuqua expressed his gratitude for this achievement in a statement, describing it as a humbling moment that honors the hard work of the film’s producers, cast, crew, and partners, as reported by Deadline. He emphasized that this milestone belongs to everyone who collaborated with a shared vision to celebrate one of the greatest artists of all time.

With this record achieved, ‘Michael’ is now aiming for an even greater goal. ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ which has grossed just over 1.01 billion dollars worldwide, currently holds the title of the highest-grossing film of the year globally. Industry analysts are now watching to see if the Jackson biopic can close that gap.

Current forecasts suggest that ‘Michael’ could ultimately finish with earnings between 1.02 and 1.05 billion dollars by the end of its theatrical run, a range that would place it within reach of, or potentially exceeding, the animated blockbuster for the year’s biggest global title.

This kind of conclusion once seemed improbable for a film that debuted amid behind-the-scenes challenges and mixed reviews. Yet audiences have clearly responded positively, turning out in large numbers across generations and continents, making ‘Michael’ one of the standout box office stories of the year.
