The speculation surrounding Glen Powell as Richard Rider has been a hot topic among Marvel fans for quite some time. Powell has been associated with various superhero roles, and the cosmic hero Nova remains one of the most talked-about possibilities. Recently, Michael Waldron, the writer behind ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ and creator of ‘Loki’, was asked directly about this casting.

Waldron, who is co-writing ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ alongside Stephen McFeely and developing Marvel’s ‘Nova’ movie, has a working relationship with Powell, having co-created the Hulu comedy ‘Chad Powers’. In a recent interview about the second season of ‘Chad Powers’, published on Oct. 16, Waldron told Variety that directing a Marvel movie would be “a dream come true.” When asked if he had considered casting Powell as Richard Rider, he humorously remarked that it’s a question for someone hypothetically directing the film, suggesting that anyone wanting to keep that job should refrain from answering.

While this response was a clever dodge, it also hinted at his potential involvement. Waldron neither confirmed nor denied his directorial role, nor did he dismiss Powell as a candidate. His response reflects a cautious approach typical for filmmakers in such situations.

Waldron’s tone has evolved over the past month. Previously, he expressed his admiration for Rich Rider while giving vague answers to ‘Nova’ inquiries. Now, he seems more open to the idea of directing, acknowledging the possibilities ahead.

The ‘Nova’ project has transitioned from an earlier concept as a Disney+ series, which was put on hold, to a feature film. Deadline has reported that Waldron is writing the script and is likely to direct if the project progresses. Currently, the film is in early development and lacks a release date.

Waldron has also teased the narrative direction of the film, indicating that it would address the destruction of the Nova Corps during ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. There are rumors that the film might introduce both Richard Rider and Sam Alexander, with Annihilus potentially serving as the villain, although none of this is confirmed.

The connection between Powell and the role is not new. Last October, Waldron mentioned to The Playlist that Powell would be a great fit for Nova when asked about suitable MCU roles for the actor. This comment sparked a year of speculation, which intensified once the movie was officially announced.

Powell has the credentials to take on such a role, having starred in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Twisters’, and ‘Anyone but You’. His performance in ‘Chad Powers’ even earned him a Golden Globe nomination for its first season. He has also been rumored for other superhero roles, including Cyclops and Booster Gold, making a Nova casting a fitting continuation of his career trajectory.

The duo has a history of collaboration. ‘Chad Powers’ is inspired by the ‘Eli’s Places’ segment from ESPN and follows a disgraced quarterback who disguises himself for a second chance at football. Waldron directed four of the six episodes in the second season, which began streaming in September.

In the Variety interview, Waldron also touched on the ratings growth for season 2 and the potential for a third season. The comedy has garnered an audience, showcasing the creative chemistry between him and Powell, which is part of why fans view Powell as a natural fit for the role.

Waldron’s schedule is already quite busy, with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, and his involvement in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ slated for Dec. 17, 2027. The ‘Nova’ film is expected to follow these releases, likely in the next phase of the MCU.

This timeline is significant as it allows Marvel ample time to make casting decisions. As of now, there have been no official reports regarding an offer or deal for Powell, nor has his interest in the role been confirmed. For the moment, the speculation continues.

Despite this, Waldron’s enthusiasm for the project suggests it holds personal significance for him. A writer who describes the opportunity to direct as a dream is unlikely to take casting lightly. The choice of who will don the Nova helmet will be made with careful consideration.
