Mike Flanagan is set to bring a fresh take on Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’ to the small screen, with the upcoming Prime Video series aiming to offer something new rather than a mere remake of the iconic horror tale. The filmmaker emphasizes the importance of retaining the essence of King’s original vision while crafting a unique narrative.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Flanagan shared that adapting ‘Carrie’ into an eight-episode series posed a distinctive challenge. The original 1974 novel is relatively short and has already inspired multiple films and TV adaptations, including Brian De Palma’s renowned 1976 movie featuring Sissy Spacek.

“The only way to approach it was to build something new out of the ingredients of ‘Carrie’,” Flanagan remarked, noting that another direct remake wouldn’t be appropriate given the numerous previous iterations.

Set in modern times, the new series will follow Carrie White as she ventures into the outside world for the first time. Summer H. Howell will portray Carrie, while Samantha Sloyan will take on the role of her mother, Margaret White.

Unlike previous adaptations, Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ will not simply replicate Spacek’s iconic portrayal. The showrunner describes this version of Carrie as more inquisitive and open, rather than someone who is already fearful of the world around her.

“She’s walking into the forest of her teenagehood without any sense of danger and with an innate trust in people and in goodness,” Flanagan explained to Entertainment Weekly.

The casting process for Carrie was extensive, with over 1,000 actresses reportedly auditioning for the role. While Howell bears some physical resemblance to Spacek, Flanagan noted that her performance was distinctive and ultimately convinced the team she was the right fit.

Sloyan’s portrayal of Margaret White will also take a different direction. Traditionally depicted as a harsh and controlling mother, Flanagan intends to delve into a more nuanced relationship between mother and daughter in this adaptation.

“Our Margaret White is a woman who fiercely loves her daughter and wants to protect her from this world,” Flanagan explained. He added that Margaret struggles to find healthy ways to protect Carrie.

The series will retain key elements from King’s narrative, including familiar characters such as Chris Hargensen, Sue Snell, Tommy Ross, Billy, Miss Desjardin, and Principal Grayle. However, Flanagan plans to broaden the storyline surrounding Carrie rather than solely focusing on the events leading up to the infamous prom night.

A significant change will involve a deeper exploration of Carrie’s powers. Flanagan mentioned that the series will incorporate themes from King’s book that previous adaptations overlooked, including the potential for a broader connection between Carrie and others with similar abilities.

“Something that the De Palma adaptation ignored was Carrie’s place in the larger universe, that she’s part of a sorority of very gifted women and just doesn’t know it,” Flanagan stated.

The show will also extend beyond Carrie’s personal journey by examining investigations, reports, and other events linked to her abilities. Each episode is expected to introduce various stories connected to women discovering their own powers.

For Flanagan, adapting ‘Carrie’ was about uncovering a new reason to revisit the narrative. Although he has worked on several Stephen King adaptations in the past, he recognized that this project required a fresh perspective due to the legacy of earlier versions.

The ‘Carrie’ series is anticipated to premiere on Prime Video this fall, offering fans a new interpretation of one of Stephen King’s most iconic characters while presenting a much broader story than previously seen.
