Milly Alcock Admits She Missed Major MCU & DCEU Films Ahead of ‘Supergirl’
Milly Alcock is gearing up to take the lead in DC’s upcoming film ‘Supergirl’, but the actress recently revealed that there are several significant Marvel movies she hasn’t seen. In a recent interview with Variety, Alcock confessed that she has missed some of the MCU’s most notable female-led superhero films, including ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Captain Marvel’.
She also mentioned that she has never watched ‘Wonder Woman’, starring Gal Gadot, despite it being one of DC’s biggest box office successes.
While discussing her preparation for ‘Supergirl’, Alcock humorously noted that skipping those superhero films is “probably not great.” She laughed and admitted, “I should just lie!” The actress explained that her focus was more on understanding Kara Zor-El as a character rather than immersing herself in the superhero genre.
According to Variety, Alcock expressed a deep connection with Supergirl’s emotional narrative. She described Kara as a character grappling with pain, loneliness, and identity crises after losing Krypton and everyone she cherished. This emotional aspect of the character resonated with her more than watching previous comic book films.
Alcock also shared her nerves during her audition for DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. She felt immense pressure knowing the significance of the role. Gunn later told Variety that he believed Alcock possessed the “edge” required for this iteration of Supergirl, which draws inspiration from the ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ comics.
Despite not watching Marvel movies for research, Alcock dedicated herself to extensive training for the role. She spent months in London mastering stunt training, fight choreography, and action sequences for the film. Director Craig Gillespie commended her dedication, stating she managed the large-scale production exceptionally well.
Alcock first gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of young Rhaenyra Targaryen in ‘House of the Dragon’. Since then, her career has soared with projects like Netflix’s ‘Sirens’ and the forthcoming DC film. She also recently completed work on a new horror movie directed by Takashi Miike.
The Variety interview also addressed the online backlash that female actors often encounter in fandom spaces. Alcock candidly discussed the toxic comments she faced after ‘House of the Dragon’ and more recently while promoting ‘Supergirl’.
She explained that social media reactions can become overwhelming, particularly for women in prominent franchises. Alcock remarked, “You’re proving my point,” while reflecting on the angry responses to her comments regarding online criticism.
‘Supergirl’ is set to premiere in theaters on June 26. The film features Alcock as Kara Zor-El, alongside Eve Ridley and Matthias Schoenaerts. According to DC Studios, the movie will portray a grittier and more emotionally complex version of Supergirl compared to previous adaptations.
Even with a superhero film now at the forefront of her career, Alcock is still catching up on some of the genre’s most significant titles. Her candid admission about missing Marvel films quickly attracted fans’ attention online, especially as she is emerging as one of DC’s newest stars.
