‘Minecraft 2’ Reveals Title, Release Date and First BTS Footage Exciting Fans
Warner Bros. has officially announced the title of the upcoming Minecraft movie. The sequel will be titled ‘A Minecraft Movie: Squared’, as shared by the studio ahead of producer Michael De Luca’s appearance at the Produced By conference.
This announcement comes over a year after the first film became a box office hit. Released in 2025, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide, attracting a significant audience of younger viewers. The film’s success helped bring many gaming and online content fans back to theaters.
In addition to the title reveal, Warner Bros. shared the first behind-the-scenes teaser and new cast images from the upcoming film. Filming is currently taking place in New Zealand, with production having started in May.
Several stars from the original film are returning for the sequel. Jason Momoa will reprise his role as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, while Jack Black returns as Steve. Danielle Brooks is back as Dawn, Jennifer Coolidge reprises her role as Marlene, and Matt Berry returns as Herobrine.
The most notable new addition to the cast is Kirsten Dunst, who joins the franchise as Alex, a well-known character from the Minecraft universe. Dunst takes over from Kate McKinnon and Alice May Connolly, who previously voiced and portrayed the character in the first movie’s post-credits scene.
The sequel has been in development for quite some time, with discussions about a follow-up reportedly starting just days after the first film’s release in April 2025. The strong box office performance and positive fan feedback quickly convinced Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment that another adventure in the Minecraft world was warranted.
Director Jared Hess is returning to helm the sequel, collaborating again with writer Chris Galletta on the screenplay. Hess has previously mentioned the endless possibilities presented by the Minecraft universe.
In earlier interviews, Legendary Entertainment’s Chairman of Worldwide Production, Mary Parent, explained the choice of the first film’s title, ‘A Minecraft Movie’, stating, “we’re calling it ‘A Minecraft Movie’ because we’re respecting the fact that there’s no one story that drives the game.”
Hess elaborated on this by saying the movie is “not the official story” and is “just one of a zillion stories.” He also noted that Minecraft offers an almost limitless array of characters, biomes, and adventures, making it easy to envision many more stories set in the game’s world.
The sequel underwent several working titles before settling on its official name. In the lead-up to the announcement, it was referred to as Another Minecraft Movie, A Minecraft Sequel, and simply A Minecraft Sequel during industry presentations. The final title, ‘A Minecraft Movie: Squared’, was officially revealed during a Minecraft Live presentation on May 30, 2026.
Warner Bros. also announced a special contest for fans called The Minecraft Movie Build Challenge. This competition allows players to have one of their creations featured in the movie or included in the film’s end credits. Sponsored by Microsoft, the contest is open to participants aged 16 and older.
As part of the promotion, a special Builder Cape will be available through TikTok, Minecraft, and Twitch until June 14. Fans can submit their entries until July 6.
Kirsten Dunst’s involvement in the sequel had been speculated before her casting was confirmed. Earlier in 2026, the actress expressed her interest in joining the franchise, as her children are fans of both Minecraft and the first movie. Her casting was officially confirmed in March.

Jason Momoa also revealed earlier this year that filming would commence in late April 2026. Production proceeded as scheduled, and footage from the set was later showcased during Warner Bros. Discovery’s annual upfront presentation. This behind-the-scenes preview provided fans with their first look at the sequel’s production.
The first movie demonstrated that video game adaptations can become significant theatrical events when they resonate with audiences. Minecraft already had a vast global following before the film adaptation, and its dedicated fanbase played a crucial role in the movie’s success. Industry experts have credited the film with attracting younger viewers who are deeply engaged with gaming, streaming platforms, and online content.
Warner Bros. is now looking to capitalize on that success with ‘A Minecraft Movie: Squared’. While story details remain under wraps, the returning cast, familiar characters, and expanded Minecraft universe suggest that fans can anticipate another large-scale adventure inspired by the beloved game.
According to Warner Bros., ‘A Minecraft Movie: Squared’ is set to hit U.S. theaters on July 23.
