Ming-Na Wen and Robert Downey Jr. have both played significant roles in shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade. Downey’s portrayal of Tony Stark launched the franchise in 2008, while Wen’s Agent Melinda May served as a cornerstone of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ throughout its seven-season run on ABC. Their first public encounter occurred in 2019 when both actors were honored as Disney Legends at the D23 Expo, a prestigious program that has recognized nearly 300 individuals for their contributions to Disney’s legacy.

Recently, the two stars reunited at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, with photos capturing their moment together during Disney’s Entertainment Showcase in Anaheim. Fans quickly took notice, highlighting the significance of their meeting, especially considering the direct connections between Melinda May and Tony Stark’s characters in Marvel’s comic book universe.

This connection was illustrated in a comic panel that fans have shared alongside reunion photos, depicting a tense exchange where May reminds Tony that neither of them is part of S.H.I.E.L.D. anymore. This blend of fiction and reality turned their simple convention encounter into a delightful piece of Marvel trivia for dedicated fans of both characters.

Their reunion coincided with a significant announcement from Disney during the same D23 weekend. According to Men’s Journal, Downey is set to reprise his role as Tony Stark—not as Doctor Doom—for two new Avengers Campus attractions opening at Disney California Adventure in 2028. This allows him a return to the Iron Man character, despite the character’s death in 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

The attractions, Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab, will also feature Anthony Mackie as Captain America and Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, according to the same report. This development provides Downey a chance to continue embodying his iconic character beyond the films. Meanwhile, Wen has remained active in Marvel-related events since ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ concluded, including a 2025 New York Comic Con reunion panel with co-stars Clark Gregg and Chloe Bennet.

Both actors have strong ties to Disney that extend beyond their Marvel roles. Wen’s association with the company began in 1996 when she voiced the title character in ‘Mulan,’ a role that contributed to her Disney Legends honor, which she shared with Downey, singer Christina Aguilera, and directors Jon Favreau and Kenny Ortega that same year. Downey has become synonymous with Disney’s modern blockbuster era since donning the Iron Man suit nearly two decades ago.

With the fictional histories of Melinda May and Tony Stark echoed in their real-life reunion at the convention where Downey’s Iron Man future was confirmed, the moment provided a poignant symmetry for fans who have followed both characters since their inception. Their shared recognition as Disney Legends and their connections to the broader MCU illustrate that Wen and Downey’s friendship has endured beyond the storylines that initially brought them together.
