Illumination’s beloved yellow henchmen have consistently proven their box office prowess. With six previous entries in the ‘Despicable Me’ and ‘Minions’ franchise raking in over five and a half billion dollars globally, this series stands as one of the most dependable family franchises in contemporary Hollywood.

The release of a seventh installment felt more like a certainty than a question, even with a busy holiday schedule looming. This year’s Fourth of July falls on a Saturday, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of American independence, a timing that industry experts had already noted could hinder movie attendance throughout the weekend.

Despite the challenges, ‘Minions & Monsters’ managed to seize the top position at the domestic box office, displacing ‘Toy Story 5’ after its two-week reign. The Illumination film earned a commendable 14.2 million dollars on its opening day, as reported by Deadline.

While this figure appears solid, especially for a midweek release, it’s important to note that it marks the lowest Wednesday opening day in the history of the ‘Despicable Me’ and ‘Minions’ franchise, a significant decline from the momentum these films have built since 2010.

In comparison, ‘Despicable Me 4’ debuted with 27.2 million dollars on its Wednesday opening in 2024, more than double what ‘Minions & Monsters’ achieved this time. Notably, this is the first time a Minions-branded film has opened on a Wednesday, a release day that has traditionally been reserved for the mainline ‘Despicable Me’ films.

‘Toy Story 5’ didn’t put up much of a fight for its former top position, experiencing a sharp decline from Tuesday to Wednesday as its second week in theaters came to a close. Pixar’s sequel has surpassed the 300 million dollar mark domestically and is nearing 600 million dollars worldwide, indicating it will remain a contender at the box office throughout the holiday weekend, despite losing its number one status.

‘Minions & Monsters’ received an A- CinemaScore from audiences on opening night, tying it with ‘Despicable Me 3′ for the highest audience rating in the franchise’s history. The film has also garnered the best critical reception of any entry in the series, with reviewers praising its 1920s Hollywood backdrop that chronicles the Minions’ rise, fall, and resurgence as movie stars, culminating in their battle against a monstrous invasion.

However, word of mouth heading into the extended holiday weekend appears to be softer than previous entries at a similar stage, which is particularly significant given the current calendar. With Saturday coinciding with the actual holiday, a day that historically diverts moviegoers toward barbecues and fireworks, industry analysts are closely monitoring Friday and Sunday as the true indicators of how the five-day weekend will unfold.

Current projections suggest a domestic total of around 80 million dollars over the full five-day opening, according to Deadline, with some theater chains estimating a range between 60 and 90 million dollars depending on how the weekend unfolds. This would fall significantly short of the 123 million dollars ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ earned during the same holiday period in 2022, and below the 122.6 million dollars ‘Despicable Me 4’ achieved in 2024.

This weekend, competition for family audiences includes the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds and the historic celebration of America’s 250th birthday, both of which could divert potential moviegoers. Additionally, Warner Bros’ ‘Supergirl’ remains in theaters during its second weekend, although it is expected to see a steep decline after a lackluster debut.

For a franchise that has never faced significant pressure during a holiday release, ‘Minions & Monsters’ finds itself in the unusual position of needing the latter part of its opening weekend to perform exceptionally well. The question remains whether the Minions can achieve another billion-dollar global run once international markets fully report.
