‘Mister Miracle’ Release Window Confirmed for 2028 with Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis
Few DC comics have garnered the kind of loyalty that Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ ‘Mister Miracle’ has. The 2017 series won significant Eisner Awards and resonated with readers who found its mix of cosmic conflict and domestic struggles deeply relatable. Fans have long wondered when this beloved story would make its way to the screen.
The adaptation was officially greenlit in June 2025 by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios as an adult animated series. This project marks the studio’s second adult animated venture following ‘Creature Commandos,’ with King serving as showrunner and executive producer. Since then, information has been sparse, with no network or cast details released.
Now, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has provided a significant update. In an interview with Collider ahead of ‘Clayface,’ Safran confirmed that ‘Mister Miracle’ is aiming for a 2028 release, stating that the team has “always thought of it as ’28.” While no specific premiere date has been disclosed, this timeline is the clearest indication yet.
Safran mentioned that he has already viewed animatics for the entire season. The series will consist of 8 episodes, each approximately 30 minutes long, indicating that production is well underway. He also highlighted that the show is part of the DCU.
There’s a suggestion that the narrative could extend beyond the initial episodes. Safran indicated that there’s no reason the series couldn’t evolve into an ongoing show with multiple seasons, although no further seasons have been confirmed. For now, the focus remains on delivering the first 8 episodes.
The casting was revealed in a separate interview with IGN, where Safran casually shared the news. Josh Hutcherson, recognized for his roles in ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s,’ will voice Scott Free, the master escape artist. Mackenzie Davis, known for her work in ‘Station Eleven,’ ‘Halt and Catch Fire,’ and ‘Terminator: Dark Fate,’ will voice his powerful wife, Big Barda.
While neither actor has been confirmed for a live-action role, some sources speculate they could reprise their characters if DC Studios opts to bring them into a live-action project. The casting also raises questions about who will voice Darkseid, a role that has yet to be announced.
King has penned every episode of the series himself, and Safran noted that his experience co-creating the live-action ‘Lanterns’ for HBO has aided him in adapting his own work. King co-created ‘Lanterns’ with Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy. Safran praised the scripts highly, expressing his admiration for the story.
He also shared an anecdote about King and the original comic. According to Safran, King has mentioned that at nearly every convention, fans approach him to say the comic saved their lives. The series aims to explore themes of survival in today’s world, acknowledging that individuals may never fully grasp the answers to life’s profound questions.
The official logline introduces Scott Free as a worldwide celebrity known as Mister Miracle, the greatest escape artist ever. However, something has gone terribly wrong in the seemingly perfect life that Scott and Big Barda have created on Earth. A war rages between their home worlds of Apokolips and New Genesis, and Scott’s cruel adoptive father, Darkseid, appears to have seized the Anti-Life Equation.
The logline describes the journey as harrowing, hilarious, and heart-wrenching, following the son of a god raised by the devil. It combines cosmic stakes with intimate emotions, aligning with the tone of the original comic. Mister Miracle was created by Jack Kirby in the early 1970s, and this marks the first time he will lead his own show.
‘Mister Miracle’ is among several animated projects currently in advanced development at DC Studios, which also includes ‘Creature Commandos’ season 2, ‘My Adventures with Green Lantern,’ ‘Starfire,’ and ‘DC Superpowers.’ This lineup demonstrates the studio’s commitment to animation as a fundamental aspect of its universe.
For fans, the confirmation that the show is part of the DCU is significant. It opens the door for the New Gods to potentially crossover with other characters, and casting Darkseid will be a pivotal moment. The 2028 release window also allows the team ample time to refine a story that holds great importance for fans.
Despite the progress, many details remain unknown. No network or streaming platform has been officially confirmed, and the exact release date is still under wraps. The studio has not yet announced who will voice Darkseid or any of the other New Gods.
Nevertheless, the combination of King’s writing, a strong lead duo, and a clear timeline is promising. With animatics already completed, the project appears to be on solid footing. Although the wait may be lengthy, the signs are encouraging.
