‘Moana’ Live-Action Remake Faces Box Office Struggles Ahead of Release

Disney has relied on live-action adaptations of its animated classics for nearly a decade, and few upcoming projects have generated as much anticipation as the return of Dwayne Johnson as Maui. The studio is banking on this nostalgia, with newcomer Catherine Laga’aia taking on the title role, aiming to recapture the cultural impact of the 2016 original.

However, this confidence is being tested by a highly competitive summer release schedule. Universal and Illumination’s ‘Minions & Monsters’ is set to debut just over a week before ‘Moana’, while Matt Damon’s ‘The Odyssey’ will follow closely, potentially limiting available screens. Additionally, ‘Toy Story 5’ is dominating box office discussions this month, leaving ‘Moana’ vying for attention in a crowded theatrical landscape.

Industry tracking reports indicate that the film’s pre-sales are significantly lagging behind expectations for a project with such strong brand recognition. The box office analyst account Global Box Office has noted that ‘Moana’ is experiencing weak advance ticket sales and may struggle to reach even $60 million domestically, with international pre-sales reportedly performing even worse.

This bleak outlook contrasts sharply with more optimistic projections circulating in the industry. According to Deadline’s three-week pre-release tracking, the film is expected to open at around $85 million domestically, a figure that aligns closely with last year’s live-action ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ which debuted to $84.6 million. Box Office Theory has estimated a range between $75 million and $96 million, with a pinpoint estimate of approximately $88 million.

However, Global Box Office’s figures suggest a much lower opening, projecting between $50 million and $70 million, a range they have consistently maintained as the release date approaches. This disparity in forecasts underscores the uncertainty surrounding the film’s box office potential, especially with its release just days away.

Part of this uncertainty stems from the film’s reported budget, with estimates placing production costs around $200 million. This figure has raised eyebrows among industry analysts, particularly given the heavy reliance on visual effects, oceanic environments, and fantasy creatures, which typically require extensive post-production work.

The film’s release also coincides with a challenging period for Johnson’s box office reputation. His previous film, ‘Black Adam’, failed to launch the anticipated DC franchise, while Amazon’s ‘Red One’ struggled to justify its budget despite significant promotion. Additionally, his awards season drama ‘The Smashing Machine’ did not perform well commercially. While Johnson remains a star, some industry experts are questioning whether his name alone can still guarantee box office success as it once did.

Audience fatigue with Disney’s live-action remake strategy is another factor to consider, as recent entries have yielded inconsistent results. While ‘Snow White’ struggled, ‘Lilo & Stitch’ crossed a billion dollars globally, indicating that success in this format heavily depends on the specific property rather than the overall strategy. Whether ‘Moana’ will align more with one outcome or the other remains uncertain as its release date approaches.

Despite the shaky pre-sales narrative, the film has garnered some attention elsewhere, with a Disney+ special look at the movie currently ranking among the platform’s most-watched titles in the United States. This suggests there is still significant curiosity surrounding the project, even if that interest has not yet fully translated into ticket sales.

‘Moana’ is scheduled to hit theaters on July 10, directed by Thomas Kail and featuring Johnson alongside Laga’aia, Rena Owen, John Tui, Frankie Adams, and Jemaine Clement. With ‘Toy Story 5’ continuing to dominate multiplexes and two more major releases set to arrive shortly after, the film has little room for underperformance without sparking a broader discussion about its box office prospects.
