Disney’s live-action ‘Moana’ has debuted to a slower-than-anticipated start, raising concerns about whether the studio has revisited one of its most beloved franchises too soon. While the original animated film is among Disney’s most cherished titles, the new remake has struggled to entice audiences back to theaters.

As reported by Variety, the live-action adaptation opened with approximately $43 million in North America and around $95 million globally during its first weekend. These figures fall significantly short of expectations for a film with a reported production budget of $250 million, alongside marketing costs estimated at an additional $120 million.

This creates a challenging path ahead for the movie. Industry projections indicate that ‘Moana’ will need to gross at least $600 million worldwide to break even in theaters, as studios only receive a portion of ticket sales after theaters take their cut. If the film performs similarly to Disney’s ‘Snow White’ remake from earlier this year, it could face losses exceeding $100 million during its theatrical run.

Analysts suggest that timing may be a key factor. Unlike many of Disney’s major live-action remakes, the original ‘Moana’ is still relatively fresh, having premiered in 2016, with ‘Moana 2’ arriving just two years before the remake. This proximity means audiences may not have had enough time to miss the characters or feel nostalgic for a new version.

Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations believes this worked against the film. “Disney’s strategy hinges on whether audiences view the remake as an event or a duplicate,” he told Variety. “This was the latter. People wanted ‘Moana 3,’ not a remake of the original.”

The reception indicates that popularity alone may not suffice. The original ‘Moana’ has emerged as one of Disney’s top streaming successes, while ‘Moana 2’ surpassed the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Despite this popularity, many viewers seemed content to revisit the animated version on Disney+ rather than pay to see a live-action retelling that closely mirrors the same story.

Despite mixed reviews from critics, audience reactions have been more favorable. The film received an A- CinemaScore, indicating that those who have seen it generally enjoyed the experience. Disney is now counting on strong word of mouth to help the movie maintain its momentum in the coming weeks, rather than experiencing a sharp decline in its second weekend.

Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore believes the upcoming weeks will be crucial for the film’s future. “Opening weekend is significant, but ‘Moana’ will depend on its long-term playability,” he stated. “That means avoiding a 60-70% drop in the second weekend.”

Another hurdle is the crowded release calendar. ‘Moana’ now faces stiff competition from several major family films, while Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is dominating premium large-format screens like IMAX, limiting one of the remake’s key opportunities to boost ticket sales.

The film’s substantial budget has also attracted scrutiny. According to Variety, Dwayne Johnson reportedly earned nearly $30 million for reprising his role as Maui while also serving as a producer. Production delays due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes further inflated the final cost.

Nevertheless, Disney’s investment in ‘Moana’ extends beyond box office returns. The franchise has evolved into one of the company’s most significant brands through merchandise, music streaming, theme park attractions, and viewership on Disney+. Since 2016, ‘Moana’ has inspired millions of toy sales, billions of music streams, and attractions at Disney parks worldwide.

Even if the live-action remake faces financial challenges, it is unlikely to spell the end for the franchise. Reports indicate that a third animated ‘Moana’ film is already in the works. However, the underwhelming launch of the remake may prompt Disney to allow more time before revisiting Motunui, enabling audiences to develop the nostalgia that helped turn many of its earlier live-action remakes into billion-dollar successes.
