A captivating red carpet look often comes with a compelling backstory, and few films this year boast a stranger tale than ‘Artificial.’ Directed by Luca Guadagnino, this OpenAI drama has transformed from a studio-backed awards contender to an orphaned project and finally a festival favorite in just a few months. Its London gala was destined to be a highlight.

The film chronicles the tumultuous days surrounding OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s abrupt firing and subsequent reinstatement in 2023, featuring Andrew Garfield in the role of Altman. Guadagnino directs from a script penned by Simon Rich, with a cast that includes Yura Borisov, Mark Rylance, and Ike Barinholtz. After debuting at the New York Film Festival on October 5, the film made its way across the Atlantic for its UK premiere.

This UK premiere turned the red carpet into a star-studded affair. On Sunday, October 11, Monica Barbaro graced the Royal Festival Hall for the film’s gala screening at the 70th BFI London Film Festival, dazzling in a shimmering ice-blue sequin midi dress. She was undoubtedly one of the standout arrivals of the evening.

The dress featured delicate straps, a sleek fitted bodice, and a midi-length skirt with a ruffled hem that added graceful movement as she posed. Silver strappy open-toe sandals completed her metallic ensemble. With her dark hair cascading in loose waves and a fresh, natural makeup look, the overall effect was effortlessly glamorous.

This look marked a departure from some of her previous premiere outfits, yet it felt entirely appropriate. The icy shimmer resonated with a film that explores the bright promises of a tech revolution, even if the attendees on the carpet seemed to have other thoughts.

Barbaro was joined by her co-stars, including Garfield, Guadagnino, Borisov, Barinholtz, and Rylance, all of whom attended the gala. Garfield sported a brown open-collared shirt paired with a matching jacket and round glasses.

Together, this eclectic cast made a memorable appearance on the festival circuit this year, reflecting a film that has been described as both a comedy and a cautionary tale. The film runs approximately 140 minutes and is featured among the festival’s galas.

The film’s journey to London was anything but straightforward. Amazon MGM Studios, which initially developed and financed the project, dropped it in June, believing it would be better suited for a different studio. Reports indicate that Netflix, A24, and Focus also passed before Neon stepped in to save the project.

Neon has scheduled a Christmas Day release in the US, with a UK and Irish release set for January 22, 2027. For Barbaro, the studio’s transition didn’t seem to cause any alarm. She expressed confidence, citing the positive feedback about the film and her faith in Guadagnino.

Barbaro portrays Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer during the firing incident. She was cast shortly after her Met Gala debut in May 2025 following a meeting with Guadagnino, filming took place between July and October of that year. For the Oscar-nominated star of ‘A Complete Unknown,’ this marks her third release of 2026, following ‘Crime 101’ and ‘One Night Only.’

She has described the film’s tone as a blend of madcap comedy and horror story, aligning with the early buzz. Reviewers who screened it in New York noted Garfield’s chilling portrayal of Altman. Others have likened the film to ‘The Social Network’ of the AI generation, raising expectations for its awards potential.

Garfield himself has mentioned that curiosity and fear fueled his performance, and the film arrives at a time when concerns about rogue AI systems are escalating. This timely release could help it stand out in an already competitive awards season.

If the early reception holds, Barbaro may find herself in another awards conversation following her breakout role as Joan Baez. Regardless, she ensured that the London premiere sparkled.
