‘Mortal Kombat II’ Had 2 Post-Credits Scenes Planned But They Were Cut
‘Mortal Kombat II’ has officially premiered in theaters and is already generating buzz among fans. The sequel picks up the narrative from the 2021 reboot, reintroducing familiar fighters while also adding new characters to the intense tournament landscape.
The film debuted on May 8, expanding the universe with both returning heroes and villains, including some characters resurrected for the sequel. However, one intriguing detail that fans may not be aware of is that the movie initially had post-credits scenes planned. Although the scripts were written, none of these scenes made it into the final version.
This revelation comes from writer Jeremy Slater, who discussed the film with ComicBook. He shared that multiple post-credits scenes were envisioned during the development phase, but they were never filmed.
“I wrote a couple of different post-credit scenes, and we just never wound up filming any of them,” Slater explained. He noted that budget constraints and planning issues during production were the main reasons for this decision. “This movie is huge and expansive and beautiful, and the special effects are awesome, but we didn’t have an unlimited budget,” he added. “We had to be very surgical and very targeted in what was actually going on in front of the cameras.”

Slater emphasized that the team had to be judicious with their spending, and post-credits scenes were not prioritized over the main storyline.
“They just didn’t justify the money that we were going to spend on them,” he stated. “And also the ideas of what 3 was actually going to be about kept changing.”
The evolving direction of the story became another significant factor in scrapping the scenes. Slater explained that the plot for a potential third film was still not finalized during the production of ‘Mortal Kombat II.’ Therefore, they wanted to avoid establishing future events that might not align with later developments.
“We kind of got a little worried that we were definitely planting a flag and saying, ‘this is the plot for 3,’” Slater said. “So we took a step back and made sure we were telling the right story.”
He also mentioned that the current script for the next installment is significantly different from earlier concepts.
“If we had had to decide two years ago what the plot of 3 is, it was something very different from the script that I’m writing right now,” he clarified. “We would have probably made one of those promises that then would have boxed us into a corner.”
Despite the absence of post-credits scenes, ‘Mortal Kombat II’ is packed with action. The film features beloved characters like Johnny Cage, Kitana, and Quan Chi, while continuing the fight for the survival of Earthrealm. The narrative revolves around a new iteration of the deadly Mortal Kombat tournament, where warriors must confront Shao Kahn, a formidable ruler intent on domination.
The story heavily focuses on Johnny Cage, who finds himself drawn into the conflict, despite his initial reluctance. From there, the plot expands into a larger confrontation involving Earthrealm’s defenders battling against impending annihilation.
Early audience feedback has been positive, with the film currently boasting a 90% audience score. According to ComicBook’s interview with Jeremy Slater, the primary focus during production was always on ensuring the main story was compelling, even if that meant eliminating additional scenes like post-credit setups.
Ultimately, the choice was straightforward. The creative team aimed to ensure the film could stand alone without prematurely committing to future installments.
