‘Mortal Kombat II’ Star Max Huang Advocates for Kung Lao and Liu Kang Spinoff Film
Max Huang, reprising his role as Kung Lao in Mortal Kombat II, has shared insights into the extensive preparation that went into bringing his character and Liu Kang’s fight scenes to life.
In a recent interview, he revealed that his training began long before filming, tracing back to the video game origins of the franchise.
Huang dedicated time to studying Mortal Kombat 11 to grasp Kung Lao’s movements and fighting style. He concentrated on key signature actions from the game, using them as a foundation to shape his on-screen performance. This blend of game research and physical training allowed him to create a version of Kung Lao that resonates with fans while maintaining a live-action intensity.
He also discussed the significant fight scene between Kung Lao and Liu Kang in the sequel, describing it as the most challenging sequence he has ever tackled.

“A huge amount of time went into this one,” Huang said. “But I am personally pretty happy with the result. It’s probably the best fight scene I’ve done so far. It’s the fight of my life.”
In the Mortal Kombat universe, both Kung Lao and Liu Kang are pivotal characters. Liu Kang is often viewed as the moral compass of the narrative and a vital protector of Earthrealm, while Kung Lao is celebrated for his exceptional fighting skills and iconic bladed hat. Together, they embody the Shaolin warrior legacy that is central to the franchise’s lore.
Their rivalry and collaboration have always been crucial in the games, which is why fans are particularly eager to see them share the screen in live action. The new film emphasizes that dynamic, allowing their relationship and combat scenes to flourish.
Huang also hinted at the meticulous nature of the production, especially regarding action choreography. Every movement was thoughtfully crafted to align with both the game’s style and the physical realities of live filming. This careful approach is a key reason why the fight is highlighted as one of the film’s standout moments.
Kung Lao is set to return in Mortal Kombat III, where Liu Kang will play a significant role in attempting to rescue him. However, Kung Lao’s history in the film series has been tumultuous, having met his demise in every previous appearance, raising concerns about his fate in the future.
Actor Max Huang hopes for a change in fortune for his character in the next installment. He expressed a desire for Kung Lao to survive this time and to have the opportunity to delve deeper into his story.
Huang also conveyed his enthusiasm for expanding the franchise beyond the main films. He expressed a strong interest in seeing a Shaolin Monks spinoff that focuses on Liu Kang and Kung Lao, exploring their origins, training under Bo’ Rai Cho, and the White Lotus.
