Television has seen its fair share of antiheroes, but few antiheroines have successfully led a premium cable series through their own moral complexities. Long before the rise of prestige TV’s fascination with morally ambiguous characters, one suburban mom was already redefining this archetype.

That show is currently experiencing a resurgence, ranking at number eight on Paramount+’s Top 10 TV Shows chart, alongside enduring favorites like ‘NCIS’ and ‘Criminal Minds’ as well as newer series like ‘Lioness’. Its “n/a” trend marker indicates it is a fresh entry on the chart, which is significant considering how long it has been off the air.

The series in question is ‘Weeds’, Jenji Kohan’s genre-blending dramedy about a widowed mother who resorts to dealing marijuana to support her family. Its placement on Paramount+ aligns with a broader shift in the show’s availability, as all eight seasons and 102 episodes are now streamable on the platform in the U.S., following Paramount’s consolidation of Showtime’s programming under its streaming service.

This timing is crucial, as Paramount+ has been actively expanding its catalog this fall. The platform added 121 new movies and shows at the beginning of September, according to Tom’s Guide, incorporating older prestige titles alongside new originals as it builds its back catalog for subscribers looking for binge-worthy content.

‘Weeds’ has consistently maintained relevance that surpasses its original ratings, largely due to its innovative approach to television storytelling. When it premiered in 2005, it challenged the notion of suburban perfection, and Mary-Louise Parker’s portrayal of Nancy Botwin ushered in a new era of morally complex female leads, moving away from the traditional polished sitcom housewife.

Parker, who won a Golden Globe for her role, remains closely associated with the show’s legacy even years after its finale in 2012. Fans have spent much of the last decade yearning for more of Nancy’s journey, especially after news emerged that a sequel series, once titled ‘Weeds 4.20’, was in development at Starz with Parker attached as both star and executive producer.

Unfortunately, that revival never came to fruition. In a discussion on The Discourse podcast, Parker confirmed that the sequel had been completely shelved, explaining that despite years of development and enthusiasm from the original cast, the decision was made not to proceed with the project. She remarked on how rare it is for an entire ensemble to remain close eight years after wrapping, expressing her desire to revisit that camaraderie on screen.

With the sequel now off the table and the original series finding new life, this resurgence on Paramount+ feels less like a comeback and more like a rediscovery. For a show that helped pave the way for television’s fascination with complicated female characters, reappearing on a Top 10 chart over a decade after its finale serves as a poignant reminder that Nancy Botwin’s story never truly needed a sequel to remain relevant.
