‘NCIS’ Welcomes Back Michael Weatherly for Season 24 After ‘Tony & Ziva’ Cancellation
Michael Weatherly is set to return to ‘NCIS’, reprising his role as Tony DiNozzo for a season-long story arc in Season 24 of the beloved CBS drama. This exciting news was confirmed by Deadline, which reported that Weatherly will once again grace screens this fall as the iconic character.
His comeback follows the cancellation of ‘NCIS: Tony & Ziva’, which aired for just one season on Paramount+. This spin-off reunited Weatherly with Cote de Pablo, who portrayed Ziva David on ‘NCIS’ and was Tony’s romantic interest throughout the series. The show delved into their life post-‘NCIS’, focusing on raising their daughter while navigating perilous situations.
As per Deadline’s report, CBS has yet to clarify whether Cote de Pablo will also return for Season 24 of ‘NCIS’. The network has not confirmed if the events from ‘Tony & Ziva’ will be acknowledged or altered, leaving fans speculating about the future of the spin-off storyline.
Weatherly first portrayed Tony DiNozzo from the early days of ‘NCIS’, having initially appeared in a backdoor pilot on ‘JAG’. He was a central character for many seasons before departing the show in Season 13. His recent appearances, including in the ‘Tony & Ziva’ spin-off, have demonstrated that the character continues to resonate with audiences.
The canceled spin-off revealed that Ziva, previously thought to be dead, was alive, leading to a heartfelt reunion with Tony and their daughter in Paris. The narrative explored their attempts to lead a quieter life while confronting threats from their past.
Despite its strong name recognition, ‘NCIS: Tony & Ziva’ was canceled after one season. Reports suggested various reasons for this decision, with performance being a significant factor. The show premiered on Paramount+ but failed to achieve the sustained audience growth anticipated for a high-profile franchise spin-off.

Another contributing factor was strategy. Paramount+ and CBS have been reorienting the ‘NCIS’ franchise to explore new directions and characters. Concurrently, the network has been investing in other spin-offs, including ‘NCIS: Origins’ and the upcoming ‘NCIS: New York’. With limited capacity for multiple interconnected series, some projects were not renewed.
Production challenges also played a role. The series relied on two lead actors with demanding schedules and high-cost location storytelling, including international settings like Paris. Streaming platforms have become more cautious about funding expensive shows unless they demonstrate strong subscriber growth or long-term engagement.
Despite its cancellation, the story of Tony and Ziva remains a favorite among fans, likely paving the way for Weatherly’s return to the main ‘NCIS’ series. His inclusion in Season 24 allows CBS to utilize the character without fully committing to another standalone spin-off.
According to Deadline, ‘NCIS’ Season 24 is set to air on Tuesdays at 8:00 PM ET/PT this fall on CBS and will also be available for streaming on Paramount+. The series remains one of the longest-running procedural dramas on television, featuring a rotating cast that includes Sean Murray, Wilmer Valderrama, Katrina Law, Brian Dietzen, Diona Reasonover, and Gary Cole.
Weatherly’s return signifies another shift in the franchise, which continues to balance nostalgia with fresh storytelling. Currently, CBS has not disclosed how long Tony DiNozzo will be part of the ‘NCIS’ world or what role he will play in the new season’s overarching narrative.
