Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck’s AI Startup InterPositive for $587 Million
Netflix has officially disclosed the amount it spent to acquire Ben Affleck’s artificial intelligence startup InterPositive, confirming that the deal was valued at hundreds of millions of dollars.
According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Netflix paid approximately $587 million in cash for the company. This information was included in Netflix’s Form 10-Q report, which outlined the company’s financial activities following the acquisition.
The acquisition was completed in March, although specifics about the deal had been unclear for several months. Earlier reports from Bloomberg indicated that the agreement could total around $600 million, depending on additional performance-based payments tied to InterPositive and its investors.
Affleck founded InterPositive in 2022, keeping the company largely private while it developed its technology. The startup concentrated on creating artificial intelligence tools tailored for filmmakers, aiming to assist artists rather than replace them.
With this acquisition, InterPositive’s 16-person team of engineers, researchers, and creative professionals joined Netflix. Affleck also took on the role of senior adviser at the streaming service, continuing to work on technology that could transform the production of movies and television shows.
InterPositive’s tools are designed to aid filmmakers during the post-production phase. The technology can utilize production footage, known as dailies, to assist with tasks such as enhancing lighting, editing visual effects, and modifying scene elements. The company’s approach emphasizes using AI as a creative resource while keeping filmmakers engaged in the decision-making process.
When Netflix announced the acquisition, Affleck noted that technology has always been integral to the evolution of filmmaking.
“From the invention of the moving image to the transition to digital, from motion capture to virtual production, technology has evolved alongside the artists who use it,” Affleck stated. “Our shared commitment to continuing this legacy makes joining together a natural next step, in addition to Netflix’s decades of experience applying and scaling technology responsibly.”
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos also discussed the company’s increasing use of artificial intelligence during the second-quarter earnings call. Sarandos revealed that around 300 Netflix titles had incorporated some form of generative AI throughout the year, highlighting how rapidly the technology is becoming integrated into the entertainment sector.
However, Sarandos emphasized that Netflix does not see AI as a substitute for filmmakers. Instead, he described it as an additional tool that can enhance creators’ efficiency.
“We believe it takes great artists to make something great, and AI is not changing that,” Sarandos remarked. “Movies are being made by people who make movies. AI provides them with better tools to make them even better.”
Sarandos also highlighted Netflix’s use of AI in projects like the docuseries ‘The American Experiment,’ where the technology reportedly helped create certain sequences more quickly and at a lower cost compared to traditional methods.
The InterPositive acquisition underscores Netflix’s broader initiative in entertainment technology as studios continue to explore how artificial intelligence can impact production. While AI remains a contentious issue among many creatives, Netflix seems focused on developing tools that empower filmmakers while maintaining human creativity at the forefront.
With the $587 million investment, Affleck’s previously secretive startup has emerged as one of the most significant AI initiatives undertaken by a major Hollywood company, indicating that the relationship between technology and filmmaking is entering a new era.
