Netflix is set to adapt one of the most beloved romance novels of recent years into a series. The streaming platform has confirmed the development of a series based on ‘Icebreaker’, the bestselling novel by Hannah Grace, which has captivated readers globally and gained immense popularity on BookTok.

As reported by Netflix’s Tudum, the upcoming series will center around Anastasia Allen, a gifted figure skater with Olympic dreams. Her life takes an unexpected twist when she must share her training rink with Nate Hawkins, a star hockey player with his own aspirations. Their initial rivalry gradually evolves into a more complex relationship as they spend time together.

The official synopsis hints at a romance filled with ambition, tension, and unexpected attraction. While Anastasia is laser-focused on winning gold, Nate is equally determined to carve out a future in hockey. However, an unforeseen accident that forces their teams to share the ice leads to distractions from their original goals as feelings begin to develop.

Netflix unveiled the project on June 15 through Tudum, providing fans with their first glimpse of the adaptation. The announcement has sparked excitement among readers eager to see this cherished story transition from page to screen.

The series is being developed by Amanda Lasher, known for her work on ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘Togetherness’, who will serve as both showrunner and executive producer. Jade Bartlett, who has credits including ‘Road House’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, is also on board as a writer and executive producer.

Lasher expressed her enthusiasm for adapting the novel, stating, “I have been a fan of steamy YA since the seventh grade, reading Judy Blume stealthily hidden behind a textbook. I love this genre, and it’s been a joy working with Jade, the team at Unwell, and Netflix to bring Hannah Grace’s beloved ‘Icebreaker’ novel to the screen.”

Bartlett shared her thoughts on the story and its characters, saying, “It’s been such a joy to play in Hannah Grace’s world of ‘Icebreaker’, a story filled with ambitious, talented, and undeniably sexy characters. But the real special sauce is that, above all, they are good, deeply compassionate people … and we cannot get enough of them.”

She added, “Hannah has created the kind of world you want to live in, and Amanda and I are having an absolute romp with our incredible teams at Unwell and Netflix, bringing this cherished story to the screen.”

This adaptation follows the remarkable success of Grace’s novel, which spent 70 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and has sold nearly five million copies worldwide. The book has also been translated into 24 languages and released in numerous countries, marking it as one of the most significant romance publishing successes of the decade.

Netflix executive Jinny Howe announced the project during the BANFF World Media Festival, explaining the company’s motivation behind adapting the novel. “Netflix has a long history of turning beloved romance novels into massive global hits. We know our members can’t get enough of these stories, which makes ‘Icebreaker’ the perfect next chapter for us,” Howe stated.

While a release date and cast details are still pending, this announcement confirms that one of BookTok’s most popular romance stories is officially making its way to Netflix. For fans of sports romance, figure skating, hockey, and slow-burn love stories, ‘Icebreaker’ is already shaping up to be one of the platform’s most eagerly awaited upcoming series.
