Netflix Cancels David Fincher’s American ‘Squid Game’ Spin-Off ‘Heckler’
In a surprising turn of events, Netflix has officially canceled David Fincher’s English-language ‘Squid Game’ spin-off, bringing an end to years of speculation and development surrounding one of the streaming platform’s most ambitious projects. The series, which was operating under the working title ‘Heckler,’ will no longer proceed, according to sources close to the filmmaker.
This project represented a significant creative partnership between Fincher and Dennis Kelly, the acclaimed creator of the British dystopian series ‘Utopia,’ who was brought on board to write the American adaptation back in 2024.
The spin-off aimed to provide a Western interpretation of the phenomenally successful Korean series, reimagining the deadly games in an American context. Although it was initially intended to be produced in the United States, the series was ultimately designed to be filmed in the United Kingdom.
The decision to shelve ‘Heckler’ comes after several years of development that generated considerable anticipation within the entertainment industry. Much of the initial buzz surrounding the project was fueled by Cate Blanchett’s unexpected appearance in the ‘Squid Game’ series finale, where she played an American recruiter in Los Angeles.
That cameo led to widespread fan theories suggesting it was a subtle hint for Fincher’s American spin-off. However, sources have clarified that Blanchett was never attached to the ‘Heckler’ project, and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk consistently denied any connection between the two.
According to reports, several factors contributed to the project’s cancellation. Netflix’s priorities shifted after years of development and executive changes, causing the project to lose momentum as Fincher focused on other endeavors.
The director has redirected his attention toward ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth,’ a side project written by Quentin Tarantino and starring Brad Pitt, which is currently in post-production. ‘Cliff Booth’ reshoots feature Jeff Cronenweth as cinematographer after Erik Messerschmidt joined ‘The Batman Part II.’ ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’ is set to hit IMAX on November 25, 2026, and will be available on Netflix globally on December 23.

In addition to Fincher’s shifting priorities, Netflix has undergone a fundamental reassessment of its ‘Squid Game’ expansion strategy. Instead of heavily investing in a single massive American series led by a renowned director, the streaming giant has pivoted to developing localized ‘Squid Game’ adaptations in France and Norway. This marks a significant departure from the original vision of creating an interconnected global ‘Squid Game’ universe centered around English-language content.
The cancellation highlights broader challenges faced by the ‘Squid Game’ franchise following its initial success. While the show’s first season became a cultural phenomenon upon its Netflix debut in 2021, attracting unprecedented viewership and cultural discussion, the franchise’s momentum seemed to wane with subsequent releases.
The show’s return engagements in 2024 and 2025 failed to replicate that same impact, quickly fading from the cultural conversation after their release.
The shelving of ‘Heckler’ represents a pivotal moment for Netflix’s franchise strategy, indicating that the platform may be recalibrating its approach to expanding its biggest hits through high-profile director-led projects. Instead, the company appears to be focusing on a more globally distributed model, developing country-specific adaptations that resonate with individual international markets rather than creating a centralized American expansion.
For Fincher, the cancellation leaves his immediate creative slate centered on his collaboration with Tarantino. What the acclaimed director will tackle next remains uncertain, although earlier reports have hinted at potential interest in a ‘Chinatown’ prequel series and a Western titled ‘Bitterroot,’ neither of which has been formally greenlit.
