Netflix Introduces Major Account Change: Every Profile May Soon Need Its Own Email Address
Netflix is implementing a new change that has left many users puzzled. Reports from Ars Technica, Cord Cutters News, and user discussions on Reddit indicate that the platform is now requiring each Netflix profile to have its own email address to function effectively.
This update is part of a larger rollout that began on June 15, as confirmed by a Netflix spokesperson cited by Ars Technica. Some users experienced this change in a stressful manner when attempting to log in, only to find their profiles locked behind a prompt requesting them to “add an email address to your profile” to continue watching.
One user recounted a situation where their father was trying to watch a live MMA event on Netflix but got locked out just before it started. Previously, he had been using a shared account with his own profile under the household subscription. However, on that day, he was logged out and could no longer access the account.
After some confusion and troubleshooting, it became clear that the new requirement was the issue. The father had to create a unique login linked to his own email address to keep using his profile. Although the user managed to resolve it in time, they described the experience as rushed and frustrating, particularly during a live event.
This incident is not unique. Many users have reported similar experiences as Netflix continues to roll out this system. Some users noted that they were not immediately forced to enter an email but were prompted to do so when changing profile settings. In some instances, Netflix also requested basic information like first and last names during the setup process.
A Netflix spokesperson confirmed to Ars Technica that this update is a permanent change. “This sign-in update is a permanent change that started rolling out on June 15, 2026,” the spokesperson stated.
Netflix aims to make profiles more independent with this change. Each user will have their own login credentials, which could simplify managing settings, using different devices, and enabling security features like two-factor authentication. According to Cord Cutters News, it also allows users to set personal preferences such as language, audio settings, and display options without impacting the main account holder.
However, this change does not apply to children’s profiles, which will continue to operate under the existing system without the need for separate email addresses.
Despite these explanations, user reactions have been mixed. Some individuals are frustrated by the added steps, particularly families who share one account and frequently switch between profiles on the same device. For them, this update feels like an unnecessary complication of what was once a straightforward process.
Others are more concerned about privacy implications. Discussions online suggest that Netflix might be collecting more personal data, including email addresses, potentially for marketing or advertising purposes. Netflix’s privacy policy does mention that email information could be shared with marketing partners, which has heightened these concerns.
Additionally, some users feel that this change disrupts their viewing organization. One Reddit user explained that they utilized multiple profiles on a single account not for different users, but to categorize content by mood and type. They noted that having separate profiles allowed them to easily switch between movies, documentaries, and rewatch shows without mixing everything together. The new email requirement complicates this system.
Overall, this update is gradually transforming how Netflix accounts function. While the company presents it as a move towards better personalization and security, many users perceive it as a more complicated and less flexible system than before.
