Netflix Is Developing a Live-Action ‘Persona’ Series – Here’s What We Know So Far
Netflix is set to bring the beloved Persona video game franchise to life in a live-action series. According to Variety, the streaming platform is currently developing this adaptation based on the acclaimed role-playing game series.
Although the project is still in its early stages, Netflix has yet to make an official announcement. However, sources have indicated to Variety that Christopher Monfette will write the adaptation, taking on the roles of showrunner and executive producer.
The series boasts a robust production team. Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Robert Atwood from 21 Laps are set to executive produce the project. Additionally, Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson will also serve as executive producers through Story Kitchen, a company recognized for its work in adapting video game properties for film and television.
Toru Nakahara from Sega will join the team as an executive producer. Emily Feher is overseeing the series for 21 Laps, which currently holds an overall television deal with Netflix.
The Persona franchise is one of the most successful Japanese role-playing game series globally. Created by P-Studio, a division of Atlus, and published by Sega, the games intertwine everyday high school life with supernatural battles and enigmatic threats.
While each installment presents a unique narrative, the franchise typically follows young protagonists who juggle normal activities such as school, friendships, and personal growth while combating formidable foes in alternate realms.
The series began with ‘Revelations: Persona’, released in 1996 as a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. Since then, Persona has evolved into a significant gaming brand, featuring six main entries and numerous spin-offs.
The latest major release was ‘Persona 5: The Phantom X’ in 2025, and ‘Persona 6’ has been officially confirmed to be in development. Additionally, ‘Persona 4 Revival’ is anticipated to launch in 2027.
A live-action Persona series would add to Netflix’s growing list of successful video game adaptations. The streamer has already achieved acclaim with projects based on popular gaming franchises, including ‘The Witcher’, ‘Arcane’, ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’, and ‘Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft’.
The involvement of 21 Laps further elevates the project’s profile. The production company is renowned for producing ‘Stranger Things’, one of Netflix’s most significant original successes. They have also worked on shows like ‘The Perfect Couple’ and ‘Last Man Standing’, along with films such as ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.
Story Kitchen’s participation aligns well with the project’s vision. The company specializes in adapting video games and other popular intellectual properties into films and television series. Upcoming projects include live-action adaptations of ‘Tomb Raider’ and ‘Life Is Strange’.
Monfette brings a wealth of experience to the writing team, having worked on several major television projects. His previous credits include shows like ’12 Monkeys’, ‘Star Trek: Picard’, and ‘9-1-1’. He is also attached as a writer and co-executive producer on Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series ‘VisionQuest’.
Details regarding the storyline, cast, release date, and which Persona game the series will focus on remain undisclosed. However, with Netflix, Sega, and experienced production companies at the helm, the live-action Persona adaptation is already generating significant buzz as one of the most anticipated upcoming video game projects.
