Netflix Loses Quality Crown to Apple TV+ and Two Rivals According to New Study

Netflix has officially lost its title for quality content. A recent study reveals that Apple TV+ and two other major streaming platforms have surpassed Netflix in terms of content quality.

While the competition among these companies typically revolves around subscriber counts and viewership statistics, this new analysis focuses on a different metric. Instead of merely counting users, the study evaluates quality through insightful measures.

The significant findings come from an independent research firm known as MoffettNathanson, which has developed the MoffettNathanson Streaming Quality Index. This unique index ranks streaming services based on five specific indicators of quality, rather than just viewer numbers. These indicators include the time of day viewers watch, overall demand for shows, the variety of franchises available, critical reviews, and the presence of live sports and events.

When considering all these factors, Netflix finds itself in fourth place. The study indicates that Apple TV+ outperforms Netflix in overall content quality, with Apple TV+ achieving a quality score of 2.04, while Netflix follows closely with a score of 1.95.

This scenario highlights a classic case of quality over quantity. Netflix boasts a vast library filled with international shows and popular original series like ‘The Crown’, ‘House of Cards’, ‘Stranger Things’, ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, and ‘Adolescence’. In contrast, Apple TV+ offers a smaller selection but consistently delivers acclaimed shows such as ‘Severance’, ‘Ted Lasso’, ‘The Morning Show’, ‘Slow Horses’, ‘Silo’, ‘The Studio’, ‘Shrinking’, and ‘Black Bird’.

Despite Apple TV+ surpassing Netflix, it did not claim the top position. Disney emerged as the clear leader, achieving an impressive score of 2.98. This success is largely attributed to its ownership of beloved franchises like Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar’s ‘Toy Story’.

Following Disney, HBO Max secured second place with a score of 2.07. Owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO Max features iconic franchises such as DC Comics, ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Game of Thrones’, and ‘Dune’, which helped it surpass both Apple TV+ and Netflix.

Other major streaming services lagged behind in the rankings. Amazon Prime Video came in fifth with a score of 1.33, closely followed by Peacock in sixth with a score of 1.32, while Paramount+ rounded out the list in seventh place with a quality score of 1.29.
