Netflix Paramount Sony and More Reportedly Considering Letterboxd Buyout
Cinephiles everywhere are preparing for potential changes at their favorite online hub. A new Puck report indicates that Netflix, Paramount, Sony, and Versant have engaged in preliminary discussions regarding a possible acquisition of Letterboxd, the cherished film logging and review platform that has become the go-to social network for movie enthusiasts.
The owners of Letterboxd have reportedly been in talks with several interested buyers, including Netflix, Sony Pictures Entertainment, David Ellison’s Paramount Skydance along with its financial supporter RedBird Capital Partners, and private equity powerhouse TPG. Additionally, Reddit co-creator Alexis Ohanian, who heads the venture firm Seven Seven Six, is also exploring a potential deal.
Currently, Letterboxd is primarily owned by Canadian holding company Tiny, which acquired a 60 percent stake in 2023 at a valuation of $50 million, while co-founders Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow maintain the remaining 40 percent. The sales process is being managed by investment bank LionTree, with bankers reportedly suggesting a valuation of $250 million this time around.
This isn’t the first time the platform has been in the spotlight for acquisition talks. In April, Semafor reported that Tiny had previously considered a sale with Versant and The Ankler, although those discussions did not materialize. Founded in 2011, Letterboxd has evolved into a significant cultural presence, especially during the pandemic, adding an impressive 10 million new members in the past year to exceed 30 million users globally.
However, not everyone is enthusiastic about the prospect of a major studio owning the platform. Critics have raised concerns that these companies might create conflicts of interest, potentially prioritizing their own films on a platform designed for genuine film discussions. Observers have pointed out that Rotten Tomatoes faced similar issues during its years under NBCUniversal ownership, a situation some have deemed problematic, while IMDb continues to be owned by Amazon.
The companies involved have largely remained silent on the matter. Letterboxd, Netflix, Paramount, and Sony Pictures have all chosen not to comment on the acquisition rumors, and representatives for Tiny and TPG have also not responded to requests for comment. Ohanian was the only one to publicly address the situation, stating to Variety that he feels like he can’t sneeze without someone discussing it.
This report comes during a particularly tumultuous time for media consolidation, following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in 2022, the Warner Bros Discovery merger that same year, and Paramount’s merger with Skydance in 2025. Paramount Skydance is reportedly nearing the completion of its own deal to acquire Warner Bros, a deal that briefly included Netflix before Paramount’s counteroffer prevailed.
For now, no agreements have been finalized, and Letterboxd has not confirmed any details about the direction these early discussions might take. However, with multiple major media companies eyeing a $250 million valuation, it appears increasingly probable that the platform millions of movie fans utilize to track their viewing history is on the verge of a significant ownership transition in the near future.
