Netflix Unveils Release Date and New Look at ‘Ray Gunn’ Animated Adventure

Netflix is set to delight audiences with a new animated adventure titled ‘Ray Gunn’, a futuristic neo-noir mystery crafted by acclaimed filmmaker Brad Bird. The film has officially received its release date, accompanied by new images that offer fans a glimpse of the characters central to the story.

During Netflix’s presentation at the Annecy International Film Festival, it was announced that ‘Ray Gunn’ will premiere on the streaming platform on December 18, 2026. This reveal was part of Netflix’s “Next on Netflix” event, which showcased several upcoming projects and updates.

Brad Bird, known for animated classics like ‘The Incredibles’ and ‘Ratatouille’, directs and co-writes ‘Ray Gunn’, collaborating on the screenplay with Matthew Robbins. The film presents an original concept by Bird, inviting viewers into a distinctive world that intertwines science fiction, mystery, and classic detective narratives.

Set in Metropia, a sprawling city envisioned in an alternate future inspired by 1939, the story follows Raymond Gunn, a private detective entangled in a perilous case involving aliens, murder, and a renowned celebrity named Venus Nova.

Sam Rockwell lends his voice to Raymond Gunn, portraying a small-time private investigator who unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a much larger mystery. He is depicted as the last human private detective in a world where humans coexist with aliens.

Joining Rockwell is Scarlett Johansson, who voices Venus Nova, a famous pop star facing personal scandals that jeopardize her career while a more serious threat looms over her life.

The initial images released by Netflix showcase Rockwell’s Ray Gunn alongside Johansson’s Venus Nova, providing an early look at the film’s stylish visual aesthetic. These images highlight the unique fusion of futuristic technology, classic detective influences, and a darker mystery ambiance.

The voice cast also features the legendary musician and actor Tom Waits as Eyera, Ray Gunn’s one-eyed alien partner. John Ratzenberger and Jamie Costa are also included in the voice ensemble.

Produced by John Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Lisa Beroud, the project is being developed through Skydance Animation, which is expanding its collection of animated films aimed at global audiences.

In contrast to traditional animated adventures, ‘Ray Gunn’ seems to embrace the essence of a detective story while incorporating unique science fiction elements. This blend of aliens, crime, and a futuristic setting gives the film a distinct identity compared to many recent animated releases.

Brad Bird’s return to original storytelling has already generated excitement among animation enthusiasts, particularly due to his track record of creating memorable characters and intricately detailed worlds. With Netflix supporting the project and a cast featuring prominent Hollywood talents, ‘Ray Gunn’ is poised to become one of the platform’s most ambitious animated films.

As Netflix continues to unveil more information about the movie, fans will eagerly await December 18, 2026, to witness Ray Gunn’s enigmatic journey unfold.
