Netflix typically opts for a limited theatrical run for its films, often transitioning them to its platform shortly after. However, the newly released trailer for ‘La Bola Negra’ indicates that this Spanish-language epic is receiving a much more significant theatrical push.

Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, collectively known as Los Javis, the film has already garnered prestigious awards at various festivals and sparked a bidding war among streaming services. Now, it is set for a theatrical release with the largest commitment Netflix has ever made.

The trailer, unveiled on Monday, showcases the intertwined stories of three gay men across different time periods. Lasting approximately 2 minutes and 4 seconds, it concludes with the announcement of its release date on October 16. The footage captures the essence of a historical epic, blending both intimate and grand moments.

The narrative unfolds in 1932, 1937, and 2017. In 1932, Carlos seeks membership at his father’s casino but faces accusations of homosexuality. In 1937, Sebastián forms a bond with Rafael, a prisoner inspired by the real-life lover of Federico García Lorca. By 2017, Alberto, a graduate student researching queer music history, delves into his family’s past following the death of his estranged grandfather.

The title ‘La Bola Negra’ is derived from an unfinished piece by the poet and playwright Lorca, who was assassinated in 1936. The film also draws inspiration from Alberto Conejero’s play ‘La piedra oscura,’ with Conejero co-writing the screenplay alongside the directors. Notably, one cast member portrays Lorca himself.

Calvo shared with Netflix’s Tudum that the film explores the central theme of “what we do with our past, with our inheritance,” a concept that resonates throughout all three timelines, lending the epic a deeply personal touch.

Spanish musician Guitarricadelafuente makes his acting debut as Sebastián, while Carlos González portrays Alberto. The cast also includes Milo Quifes as Carlos, Miguel Bernardeau as Rafael Rodríguez Rapún, and notable names like Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz, and Glenn Close. Guitarricadelafuente not only acts but also co-wrote and performs the original song “La Nieve,” with Raül Refree composing the score.

Netflix intends to campaign for the entire principal cast in supporting categories, including Cruz and Close alongside the debut star, marking a bold awards strategy for a Spanish-language film.

The film premiered in competition at the 79th Cannes Film Festival on May 21, receiving a standing ovation that lasted between 16 and 20 minutes. Calvo and Ambrossi were awarded the Best Director prize, sharing it with Pawel Pawlikowski for ‘Fatherland.’ Following a competitive bidding war, Netflix secured the U.S. rights.

It later won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, becoming the first non-English-language film to achieve this in 15 years. Additionally, it won the audience award at San Sebastián and was selected as Spain’s official Oscar submission. In Spain, it achieved the second-best opening of the year for Spanish cinema, surpassing ‘The Odyssey.’

Netflix will release ‘La Bola Negra’ in theaters on October 16, followed by its availability on the platform on December 2 in the U.S. and Canada. This 47-day exclusive window marks the longest Netflix has ever offered for a film, surpassing the previous record set by ‘Marriage Story’ at 30 days.

In contrast, David Fincher’s upcoming ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’ will only receive a two-week IMAX-exclusive run. Furthermore, Netflix plans to disclose full box office results for ‘La Bola Negra,’ a first for the streaming service, indicating a newfound confidence.

The film will debut in New York and Los Angeles on October 16, with screenings at locations such as the Angelika Film Center, The Paris Theater, AMC Century City, and AMC Burbank. It will expand to 17 markets on October 30 and over 70 markets on November 6. Filmed on 35mm, it will be presented in that format.

Calvo and Ambrossi, along with select cast members, will participate in Q&A sessions in theaters in both cities, providing audiences with the opportunity to engage with the filmmakers directly and enhancing the event atmosphere of the release.

With strong reviews, the film currently holds an 88% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. The directors aim to tell a story centered on freedom, legacy, and LGBTQ+ visibility, while honoring the generations whose bravery paved the way for current freedoms.

For Netflix, the stakes are significant. A successful wide release could demonstrate that a non-English queer epic can thrive in theaters before reaching a global audience on streaming. If successful, it may alter how the company approaches its awards contenders.
