Netflix’s new adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s cherished book series officially started streaming on July 9, 2026, and dedicated fans have already observed a significant change in the setting. Rather than the familiar Minnesota town that many grew up watching, this version places the Ingalls family in an entirely different location, a choice that has sparked considerable discussion following the premiere.

This shift is rooted in the source material. Created by Rebecca Sonnenshine and executive produced by Trip Friendly, the son of the original series producer Ed Friendly, the new ‘Little House on the Prairie‘ merges family drama with adventure, drawing from a specific chapter of Wilder’s literary timeline rather than the one most casual viewers recall from the 1970s broadcast.

This adaptation is based on the third book in Wilder’s series, which follows the Ingalls family as they leave the Big Woods of Wisconsin and journey into Kansas in search of a new beginning in the expanding American West. This distinction is crucial for anyone expecting the Minnesota prairie town most associated with the franchise.

The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of the American Civil War, showcasing a family determined to forge a new life in a nation still defining its identity. Netflix’s synopsis describes a close-knit family building a new life on the Western frontier, where the beauty of nature and the struggle for survival are intricately linked.

The premiere episode clearly establishes the geography. The Ingalls family trades Wisconsin’s woods for the expansive plains of Kansas, where their new life presents both stunning beauty and real danger. This Kansas setting, particularly around the town of Independence, is where most of the new season unfolds.

The series begins just after the chaos and horror of the Civil War, portraying a nation still in its infancy as settlers navigate their identities in a transforming world. Walnut Grove does not play a role in this chapter of the family’s journey, at least not yet.

This distinction is significant because Wilder’s original nine-book series did not adhere to a single fixed setting. Each book documented a different segment of the family’s real-life migration, and ‘Little House on the Prairie’ specifically details their time attempting to settle on Osage territory in Kansas before Walnut Grove is introduced in later installments.

The nine-book ‘Little House’ series has sold over 73 million copies across more than 100 countries and has been translated into at least 27 languages, according to figures released by Netflix. This broad scope allowed the new writers to focus intently on one specific stretch of the Ingalls story rather than condensing the entire saga into eight episodes.

Dr. Tann, portrayed by Jocko Sims, is inspired by a real-life Black doctor who saved the Ingalls family and served as the only physician for miles, having been born free in Philadelphia. This kind of historically grounded detail makes sense within the Kansas frontier setting that the show has chosen to dramatize first.

The series also acknowledges that the Ingalls, along with many other settlers, arrived in Kansas to occupy land that did not legally belong to them, a theme that is directly tied to the location selected by the writers for season one.

Ten-year-old actress Alice Halsey was cast as Laura Ingalls in April 2025, with Luke Bracey, Crosby Fitzgerald, and Skywalker Hughes joining the following month as Charles, Caroline, and Mary. Warren Christie, Meegwun Fairbrother, Wren Zhawenim Gotts, Alyssa Wapanatǎhk, and Jocko Sims completed the cast with additional key roles.

Principal photography commenced on June 10, 2025, and concluded that October, with filming locations including Winnipeg, Canada, which stood in for the Kansas frontier. This Canadian production base helped recreate the sweeping, untamed landscape central to the story’s early setting.

The series was renewed for a second season in March 2026, prior to its premiere, indicating that the Ingalls family’s story is just beginning to unfold on screen. The show was produced by CBS Studios and Anonymous Content for Netflix.

Given the strong renewal for a second season, there’s a real chance that Walnut Grove will eventually come into play as the show continues to follow the family’s westward journey book by book. Whether Netflix decides to advance the timeline or linger in Kansas a bit longer remains to be seen.

Do you think this new interpretation should eventually lead to Walnut Grove, or would you prefer to see the Ingalls family’s Kansas chapter explored in greater depth first?
