It’s been quite a while since Netflix first announced a second season of The Watcher, and for some time, it seemed like the project might be shelved indefinitely. Nearly four years after the renewal announcement, recent production updates indicate that the series is finally making progress.

Multiple production sources report that The Watcher is gearing up to start filming. Although Netflix has not officially confirmed a filming schedule, various industry listings suggest that production could commence later this year, marking the first significant update regarding the show’s future in quite some time.

The thriller debuted on Netflix in October 2022. Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the series was initially intended as a limited series based on the true story of the Broaddus family and the enigmatic letters sent to their New Jersey residence. The show quickly became one of Netflix’s major successes, prompting the streamer to greenlight a second season just a month after its premiere.

At the time of the renewal in November 2022, Netflix also renewed Murphy’s Monster anthology for two additional seasons.

Bela Bajaria, who was Netflix’s Head of Global TV at the time, remarked on the decision, saying:

“Audiences can’t take their eyes off Monster and The Watcher. The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, on Monster, along with Eric Newman, on The Watcher, are masterful storytellers [who’ve] captivated audiences all over the world.”

However, after that announcement, updates became scarce. The Hollywood strikes, Ryan Murphy’s new overall deal with Disney, and the lack of official news led many fans to speculate whether the second season had been quietly canceled. Even the cast had little information to share.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in January 2024, Naomi Watts, who portrayed Nora Brannock, confessed that she had not received any updates about the show’s return. “I know they said yes to the next series, but I haven’t heard anything more. To be honest, we left the house, so I don’t know if we’ll be coming back.”

Later that year, she provided another update, stating: “I don’t have an update, I’m afraid… I don’t have one, if there is one.” Executive producer Eric Newman also remained cautious when discussing the series’ future. In early 2024, he told Radio Times: “I can say nothing other than we’re very excited about the prospect of another season of The Watcher. That’s all I can say.”

Now, new production information indicates that the project is finally gaining momentum.

According to several production listings, filming was initially expected to begin around June 2026 and continue into early 2027. However, ProductionWeekly currently lists the project as set to start production in October 2026 in New York. Since schedules frequently change before filming begins, the exact start date remains uncertain.

Netflix has yet to disclose any casting details or storylines for the upcoming season.

This raises a significant question: will Season 2 continue the narrative of the Brannock family, or will it take a different direction altogether? Given that the first season adapted a real-life case that largely reached its conclusion, many fans are curious if The Watcher could evolve into an anthology series featuring a new mystery each season.

For now, Netflix has not revealed its plans. Nevertheless, after years of silence, the recent production activity is the strongest indication yet that The Watcher Season 2 is finally progressing.

Ryan Murphy Productions and Screen Arcade are expected to return as producers, with Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan once again serving as writers and executive producers alongside Eric Newman and the rest of the production team. More official details are anticipated once filming commences.
