Netflix is revisiting one of Italy’s most notorious criminal cases. Following the impressive success of ‘The Monster of Florence’, the streaming service has officially greenlit a new chapter of the true-crime series, with production already in progress.

The first season debuted last fall and quickly emerged as one of Netflix’s top international hits. This Italian series chronicled the investigation into the murders associated with the so-called Monster of Florence, a serial killer who plagued parts of Italy for years. The show received acclaim from both critics and viewers, solidifying its status as one of the platform’s most-watched non-English language titles.

According to information released by Netflix, the new chapter will feature three episodes and will delve into various theories and suspects linked to the long-standing case. While the initial season concentrated on one phase of the investigation, the upcoming episodes will progress in time and explore another contentious chapter.

Director and co-creator Stefano Sollima confirmed that the series was always intended to function as an anthology, with each chapter spotlighting a different suspect and aspect of the investigation.

“We always envisioned ‘The Monster of Florence’ as an anthology series: standalone stories, each dedicated to one of the different suspects in the series of crimes that shocked Tuscany and Italy between the 1970s and 1980s… An investigation that lasted over 30 years.”

The new episodes will place significant emphasis on Pietro Pacciani, a prominent figure associated with the case. Pacciani became the primary suspect in the murders that occurred between 1968 and 1985. His legal battles drew massive attention in Italy and ignited years of debate among investigators, journalists, and the public.

Sollima elaborated on why this particular chapter remains so captivating and contentious.

“After focusing on the Sardinian suspects, this time we leap forward in time to address perhaps the most well-known, controversial, and debated chapter of the entire incident: the story of Pietro Pacciani, convicted and later acquitted of the crimes, and his alleged accomplices, the infamous ‘Snack Buddies,’ as the press dubbed them.”

He further emphasized why the case continues to intrigue audiences decades later.

“Perhaps this is also why Pacciani’s case remains the most disturbing: guilt has never been proven, but also never completely ruled out.”

The creative team behind the first season is returning for the new chapter. Sollima will once again direct the series and continues as co-creator alongside Leonardo Fasoli. Production is being managed by AlterEgo and Wildside, two companies renowned for producing successful Italian film and television projects.

The renewal comes as no surprise given the impressive performance of the first chapter. In addition to drawing a large audience on Netflix, the series received industry accolades, winning the Nastro d’Argento Grandi Serie Award for Best Crime Series.

Netflix has yet to announce an official release date. However, with filming underway in Italy, viewers may have to wait until 2027 for the next chapter to arrive. Until then, fans of true crime can anticipate another in-depth exploration of one of Italy’s most enigmatic and debated criminal investigations.
