A fresh look at Lupita Nyong’o in ‘The Odyssey’ is generating significant buzz online, though not all feedback has been positive.

An image of Nyong’o portraying Clytemnestra from director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film has recently gone viral, quickly becoming a hot topic among cinema enthusiasts.

Early reactions shared on social media show that many fans are praising the actress’s appearance, claiming she embodies the role perfectly. Comments describe the image as “powerful,” “intense,” and “beautiful,” with some expressing heightened excitement for the film following this character reveal.

Conversely, there has been notable backlash regarding Nyong’o’s casting. Some critics on social media have voiced their desire for the film to adhere more closely to traditional interpretations of ancient Greek mythology, questioning certain casting decisions in Nolan’s adaptation. This backlash has ignited heated discussions across platforms like X and Reddit, with many users defending Nyong’o and deeming the criticism unjust.

Neither Nyong’o nor Nolan has publicly addressed the ongoing debates surrounding the casting.

The film is poised to be one of the most significant upcoming Hollywood projects, based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem, ‘The Odyssey.’ According to production details released by Universal Pictures, the narrative follows Odysseus as he endeavors to return home after the Trojan War, facing formidable creatures, gods, and insurmountable challenges along the way.

Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, while Anne Hathaway plays his wife Penelope. The cast also features Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

Nyong’o is reportedly set to portray two characters in the film, including Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. Clytemnestra is a significant figure in Greek mythology, known as the wife of Agamemnon and one of the most tragic and controversial female characters in the narrative.

Nolan began writing the script in 2024 before officially launching the project with Universal Pictures later that year. Filming took place across various countries, including Greece, Morocco, Italy, Iceland, and Scotland.

The film has also garnered attention due to its substantial budget. Reports indicate that production costs have reached approximately $250 million, making it the most expensive film Nolan has ever directed. It is also reportedly the first feature film shot entirely using IMAX 70 mm cameras.

Nolan has previously explained his intention for the movie to feel more grounded and realistic, despite the fantasy elements inherent in Greek mythology. He drew inspiration from Emily Wilson’s modern translation of ‘The Odyssey’ as well as classic fantasy adventure films created by special effects legend Ray Harryhausen.

Currently, anticipation for the film continues to build online, despite the controversy surrounding some casting choices. Many fans are particularly eager to see how Nolan depicts iconic mythological characters such as Athena, Calypso, Circe, and the Cyclops Polyphemus on screen.

‘The Odyssey’ is set to premiere in theaters and IMAX screens in the United States on July 17.
