New Look at Zendaya’s MJ and Spider-Man in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Revealed
The upcoming chapter of the Spider-Man saga takes a significant turn for Peter Parker and MJ, portrayed by Tom Holland and Zendaya.
The film ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ picks up right after the events of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, where a powerful magic spell altered reality, erasing Peter Parker from the memories of nearly everyone in his life.
Due to this spell, no one remembers Peter as an individual, including his closest friends. This includes MJ, played by Zendaya, and Ned, played by Jacob Batalon. Their once-strong friendship and romantic connection are now completely absent from their minds. As a result, Peter finds himself entirely alone in his personal life while he continues his duties as Spider-Man.
The conclusion of ‘No Way Home’ depicted Peter choosing to embrace this isolated existence. This decision is framed as a sacrifice tied to responsibility, with Peter opting to protect others even at the cost of losing those he loves. ‘Brand New Day’ delves into the realities of living this choice on a daily basis.
Zendaya spoke to Empire about the emotional weight of this situation for the characters, even from an external viewpoint. She expressed that although MJ does not remember Peter, the pain is still palpable when one considers their past connection. She remarked, “As someone who cares about the characters and cares about these films, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, it’s so heartbreaking.’ You just feel so bad because you want them to be happy, and you know ultimately they would be happier together.”
In this new narrative, MJ is also seen progressing with her life. She reportedly has a new romantic interest in the film, played by Eman Esfandi. This development adds another layer of emotional separation between her and Peter, who can no longer approach her as someone from her past.
Even though MJ has no recollection of Peter Parker, she is still aware of Spider-Man’s existence. This means the two will likely encounter each other during the film, but their relationship will be fundamentally different. It will no longer be rooted in shared memories or personal history, but rather in Spider-Man’s role in the world.
Zendaya also shared how this shift influences her performance. Without the necessity to portray a shared past, the character becomes simpler in some ways, yet also colder in terms of emotional connection. She noted, “It’s easy in a way, because I don’t have to play that I know this person. I don’t have to play all the history that they have together because seemingly, to her, they don’t.”
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ continues to examine the repercussions of Peter Parker’s erased identity and the impact of losing personal relationships while striving to be a hero. According to Empire, the film heavily emphasizes the emotional toll of that choice.
At its core, the narrative now centers on a version of Peter who retains all his memories, while everyone else has moved on without him.
