New Video of Jaafar on the ‘Michael’ Set During Rehearsals Surfaces and Fans Are Loving It
Musical biopics rely heavily on their concert sequences, and audiences have become increasingly discerning when it comes to recreating iconic live performances. While nailing the choreography is essential, capturing the energy of a real stadium crowd presents an entirely different challenge.
This challenge is at the heart of ‘Michael,’ Antoine Fuqua’s expansive portrayal of the King of Pop’s journey from the Jackson 5 to global superstardom. Even before the film became a billion-dollar box office success, it was already generating excitement for how convincingly Jaafar Jackson embodied his late uncle on stage.
A newly released video provides fans with another look into that process, showcasing Jaafar rehearsing on the ‘Michael’ set for the film’s climactic ‘Bad’ performance. The clip captures him in the midst of rehearsal with a live band, working through the choreography that would ultimately anchor one of the movie’s most crucial sequences.
This sequence holds more significance than it might seem. As reported by NME, director Fuqua opted to film Michael’s recreation of the ‘Bad’ tour at Wembley Stadium on the very first day of production, believing that tackling one of the most challenging performances early on would help Jaafar build confidence.
The importance of getting this scene right extended beyond just choreography. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Fuqua recounted how Jaafar first stepped out in front of over 400 extras and a full band for the concert scenes. He noted that when Jaafar walked onto the stage, the crowd erupted in screams, and once the music started, it felt as if everyone was transported to a genuine Michael Jackson concert.
Fuqua emphasized that the reactions were authentic and not staged, mentioning that even when the cameras were off, extras continued to cheer for more, feeding off the energy Jaafar was generating. The production had to bring in extra cameras to capture the spontaneous reactions happening throughout the crowd, as much of what unfolded felt unscripted and genuine.
The ‘Bad’ performance also has added significance within the film’s narrative structure. According to Variety, editor John Ottman structured the movie to bookend it with the ‘Bad’ concert, using it as both an early tease and the emotional conclusion of the story. He compared this structural choice to the “mini Live Aid” sequence that concluded ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’
This approach reportedly kept Ottman awake at night during the editing process, given how crucial the scene needed to be as both a spectacle and a character resolution, marking the moment Michael finally emerges from under his father’s shadow as a fully independent artist. Rehearsal footage like this new clip offers a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the extensive groundwork that went into making that finale impactful.
With the attention Jaafar’s performance has garnered since the film’s release, it’s clear why clips like this continue to circulate among fans revisiting the production’s most significant moments. The rehearsal footage adds another dimension to a performance that has already transformed expectations for modern music biopics.
