Nicolas Cage Explains His Suggestion for Filming ‘Spider-Noir’ in Color
Nicolas Cage has revealed intriguing insights about the creative decisions behind Spider-Noir, detailing why the series will debut in both black-and-white and color.
This upcoming series reimagines Spider-Man through a darker, detective-style narrative set in 1930s New York. Cage portrays an older version of the hero, Ben Reilly, also known as The Spider. The show blends superhero storytelling with classic noir film aesthetics, emphasizing crime, mood, and a more grounded atmosphere.
Initially, Spider-Noir was intended to fully embrace black-and-white visuals, reflecting the essence of old Hollywood filmmaking. However, Cage advocated for a second color version, aiming to make it more relatable for younger audiences.
He explained: “You don’t only have to shoot it in black and white; you can also get teenagers, who might be watching, by shooting in color with almost a colorized feel. And maybe that’ll make them interested in watching it in black and white.”
Cage’s intention was not to replace the original noir style but to utilize color as a means to attract new viewers. The aim was to spark curiosity in younger audiences about black-and-white films rather than deter them from it.
According to him, this concept received backing from the creative team early in production. Consequently, both versions were planned from the outset, influencing various aspects of the show’s production, including lighting, camera techniques, costumes, and even performance styles.
Despite the availability of a color version, the creators emphasize that the series remains faithful to its noir origins. The narrative draws heavily from classic detective films and traditional Hollywood storytelling, infused with a superhero twist.
Cage has also reportedly studied classic film actors to develop his portrayal of the character, taking inspiration from legends like Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, and Edward G. Robinson to shape the tone and personality of his role.
The series is set to premiere on May 25 in the United States, with a global release on May 27 on Prime Video. Both black-and-white and color versions of Spider-Noir will be available at launch.
