Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Is Tracking to Dethrone ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ as Highest-Grossing R-Rated Movie
Christopher Nolan has consistently achieved box office milestones, but ‘The Odyssey’ is proving to be extraordinary even by his standards. The film has dominated global charts during its first two weekends in theaters, with numbers that continue to astonish.
Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic poem opened with the largest global debut of his career and has gained momentum since. In just two weekends, the film has surpassed 639.6 million dollars worldwide, positioning it on a path toward the billion-dollar mark that most blockbusters rarely reach.
This trajectory has sparked speculation about how historic this run could ultimately be. Beyond merely crossing a billion dollars globally, ‘The Odyssey’ seems to be on track to surpass ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, which concluded its run at 1.08 billion dollars, potentially becoming Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever.
Even more remarkable is the potential for ‘The Odyssey’ to surpass ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. That Marvel blockbuster concluded its theatrical run at 1.338 billion dollars, a benchmark that once seemed unattainable for an R-rated release, given how few films in that category reach nine figures, let alone ten.
The pace driving this speculation has been impressive even by tentpole standards. ‘The Odyssey’ opened to 263.7 million dollars worldwide, marking the biggest global start of Nolan’s career, and followed that with an 87 million dollar domestic second weekend, breaking his previous record set by ‘The Dark Knight’.
Much of this success can be attributed to IMAX, where the film has become the format’s highest-grossing sophomore weekend ever recorded. IMAX’s reporting indicates that the format alone accounts for 140 million dollars of the film’s total, highlighting the demand for premium formats driving this release.

The film’s domestic performance has also been impressive, with a running total of 286.3 million dollars, making ‘The Odyssey’ the highest-grossing R-rated movie of the year domestically, surpassing other major releases in that category.
Industry analysts have noted that the film’s unusual low reliance on a massive theater footprint makes its box office run an outlier. A relatively smaller number of premium format screens have driven a significant share of the total gross, a trend more commonly associated with filmmakers like James Cameron than typical wide releases.
With ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ set to open the following weekend and expected to draw massive numbers, ‘The Odyssey’ will need to carefully maintain its premium screens to sustain this pace. Nevertheless, projections currently place ‘The Odyssey’, ‘Avengers Doomsday’, and ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ as the three films most likely to cross the billion-dollar mark by the end of the year.
For a three-hour, R-rated adaptation of a three-thousand-year-old poem, achieving this level of commercial success would be an unprecedented feat. If the current trajectory continues, ‘The Odyssey’ may rewrite box office history in multiple ways.
‘The Odyssey’ is currently playing in theaters worldwide.
