Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Unveils First Look at Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, and Elliot Page
The mythological blockbuster event of the summer just became even more tangible. We have received the first official glimpse of Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, and Elliot Page in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, and the visuals are as atmospheric and meticulously crafted as fans of the director have come to expect.
Theron portrays Calypso, a nymph residing on the island of Ogygia who attempts to keep Odysseus as her immortal husband. The first look image, which comes from a recently released trailer, showcases her enveloped in warm golden light, her expression a blend of tenderness and danger, perfectly embodying the essence of Calypso. This role marks a significant revelation, as earlier speculation and even some of Theron’s own comments had suggested she would play Circe instead of Calypso.
Theron had alluded to the Circe connection during a Variety red carpet interview before joining the production, expressing her intention to discuss the role with Nolan and admitting she found it “super intimidating” as the last cast member to arrive on set. The first look images effectively dispel those early rumors, presenting a compelling portrayal that fans are sure to appreciate.
John Leguizamo joins the epic as Eumaeus, Odysseus’s loyal servant. The first look captures him as windswept and world-weary against a gloomy sky, serving as a quietly grounding presence in what promises to be a film of grand scale. Leguizamo has built an impressive résumé over the decades, earning Emmy nominations for ‘When They See Us’ and ‘Waco’, while also appearing in ‘Encanto’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, and ‘John Wick’. His inclusion in Nolan’s universe feels like an inspired choice.
Elliot Page completes the trio in the first look, appearing battered and grim in what seems to be a scene filled with physical and emotional weight. Page is among several cast members with undisclosed supporting roles in the film, meaning audiences will have to wait until July to discover how they fit into Homer’s expansive epic. This mystery aligns perfectly with Nolan’s tendency to keep details under wraps.
The film boasts a reported budget of around 250 million dollars and is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on July 17. Composer Ludwig Göransson, known for his work on ‘The Mandalorian’, ‘Oppenheimer’, and ‘Sinners’, joins the production alongside cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, who has worked on every Nolan film since ‘Interstellar’. The talent behind the camera is as impressive as that in front of it.
At CinemaCon, Nolan humorously remarked on the sheer scale of his ensemble, joking that it would have been quicker to list who is not in the movie, and that the combined weight of such extraordinary talent could have collapsed the stage. With names like Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Jon Bernthal already confirmed, the addition of Theron, Leguizamo, and Page only heightens the anticipation for what could be Nolan’s most ambitious project yet.
What do you think of the first looks at these three cast members in ‘The Odyssey’, and which character or storyline are you most eager to see Nolan bring to life?
