Marvel Studios has consistently embraced the challenges of its interconnected timeline, and the cosmic segment of the MCU still has plenty of unresolved issues from the Infinity Saga. Among these, the fate of the Nova Corps stands out as a particularly glaring plot thread that remains unaddressed.

Fans have long speculated about how Marvel would ultimately introduce Richard Rider into live action, especially since the character’s comic book origins are deeply tied to a catastrophic attack on his home planet. With a Nova project finally in development, this question has become increasingly urgent.

Recently, the writer associated with the project confirmed what many fans had anticipated. In an interview with TheWrap, Michael Waldron addressed the destruction of the Nova Corps directly when asked if the story would tackle this issue, stating, “They would have to reckon with that. Yeah.”

This confirmation is significant, considering how the fate of the Nova Corps has been left unresolved since ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ In that film, Thanos annihilates the planet Xandar in his quest for the Power Stone, effectively eradicating the intergalactic police force that previously appeared in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’

The destruction of Xandar carries additional weight for those familiar with Richard Rider’s comic book legacy. In the acclaimed “Annihilation” storyline, which Waldron has mentioned as his favorite Nova comic, Rider becomes the last survivor of a similar assault by the villain Annihilus, absorbing the entire Nova Force and merging with the Xandarian Worldmind to lead a resistance.

Given how closely the destruction of Xandar in “Infinity War” parallels Rider’s comic book origins, it’s conceivable that some of his most iconic backstory could be adapted for the film with minimal additional narrative groundwork. However, it remains unconfirmed whether Waldron’s project will explore this connection, as he refrained from disclosing specific plot details regarding his involvement.

Throughout the conversation, Waldron was cautious not to reveal too much about the project, mentioning that he wasn’t certain how much he could disclose about his work with Marvel. Nevertheless, he expressed genuine enthusiasm for the character, hoping that whoever ultimately portrays Rider will do justice to the role.

One of the reasons Nova has been such a challenging character to adapt is the extensive comic book history associated with Richard Rider across various eras. Waldron highlighted this complexity as a factor in the character’s delayed project, emphasizing the difficulty in determining the best starting point for his story, whether it should be grounded on Earth or set within the Nova Corps.

Development of the project has reportedly faced several delays, with earlier reports this year indicating that Marvel had briefly paused work on Nova along with other projects during a broader studio reevaluation. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has since indicated that the film is still a few years away from release, suggesting that the project is progressing, albeit without a set timeline.

Waldron’s growing involvement in Marvel’s cosmic and ensemble storytelling extends beyond Nova, as he is also attached to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and is reportedly contributing to ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ This expanding portfolio indicates that Marvel continues to place significant trust in Waldron’s ability to manage some of its most intricate interconnected narratives.

For now, fans will have to wait to see how deeply the Nova film delves into the tragedy of Xandar and whether it draws directly from the “Annihilation” storyline that Waldron admires so much.
