Hollywood has a penchant for underdog stories, and this year has showcased that massive budgets aren’t always necessary for monumental success. A wave of low-budget horror films has proven they can compete with the biggest studio releases, and few narratives exemplify this better than the one currently unfolding at the box office.

The horror genre has a rich history of films that exceed their financial limitations, from ‘The Blair Witch Project’ to ‘Paranormal Activity’ and the original ‘Evil Dead.’ These films became iconic not just for their scares but for demonstrating that a compelling concept, executed effectively, can outperform much larger-budget films. This tradition continues robustly this year, with astonishing numbers backing it up.

‘Obsession,’ crafted by YouTube filmmaker Curry Barker and produced on a modest budget of just $750,000, has officially become the highest-grossing film ever made for under one million dollars. After eight weekends in theaters, the film has surpassed $400 million worldwide, a remarkable achievement that places it ahead of Bruce Lee’s ‘Enter the Dragon,’ which was made for $850,000 in 1973 and grossed a similar amount before inflation adjustments.

The film centers on Bear, portrayed by Michael Johnston, whose obsession with his friend Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, spirals into dangerous territory after he uses a novelty toy to wish for her love. What began as a modest festival release has transformed into one of the biggest original theatrical hits in recent years, joining Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ as one of only two original films since 2018 to surpass $200 million domestically.

‘Obsession’ first gained attention at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, where Focus Features acquired distribution rights for a record-breaking $14 to $15 million for a genre film at the festival. Jason Blum soon joined as an executive producer through his Blumhouse banner, adding further horror credibility to the project ahead of its theatrical release.

When the film debuted in May, it earned $17.1 million from over 3,000 North American theaters, a solid but unremarkable opening compared to what followed. Instead of the typical drop-off seen with horror releases, ‘Obsession’ continued to climb week after week, ultimately becoming Focus Features’ highest-grossing release ever and the highest-grossing film festival acquisition, surpassing ‘The Blair Witch Project’ in that regard.

The film’s success coincides with another breakout horror hit this summer, A24’s ‘Backrooms,’ directed by fellow YouTube creator Kane Parsons and produced for around $10 million. Together, these films represent a cultural moment, illustrating how a new generation of filmmakers, who honed their skills on YouTube and other online platforms, are reshaping audience expectations for theatrical horror.

‘Obsession’ has already transitioned beyond its theatrical run, arriving on digital platforms in late June, complete with behind-the-scenes content and a director’s commentary, quickly topping multiple streaming charts. A physical media release on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD is also forthcoming. With awards season discussions already beginning to circulate around the film, its box office milestone feels less like a conclusion and more like another chapter in an extraordinary success story.
