Hollywood has a penchant for underdog narratives, yet few genres are as challenging for newcomers as horror. Even the most successful horror films often debut with a bang and fade away just as quickly, rarely achieving the cultural significance of major franchises.

‘Obsession‘ was not expected to break this mold. Directed by debut filmmaker Curry Barker on a limited budget, the film hit theaters without the extensive marketing or established fanbase that usually propels a horror movie’s box office success.

However, what unfolded has become one of the most astonishing box office tales of the year. As reported by DiscussingFilm, ‘Obsession’ has officially secured its place as the fifth highest-grossing horror film of all time, with some analysts suggesting it could surpass the $500 million mark and become the biggest original film of the decade.

This trajectory seemed almost impossible when the film first premiered. Produced for between $750,000 and $1 million and picked up by Focus Features for an estimated $14 to $15 million, ‘Obsession’ opened to a modest $17.2 million across 2,615 theaters, a solid yet unremarkable start for a horror release.

What set this film apart was its unexpected growth. Instead of the typical decline in its second weekend, ‘Obsession’ actually increased its earnings by 39 percent, raking in $23.9 million—a rare feat for the genre. Comscore’s head of marketplace trends, Paul Dergarabedian, described this surge as one of the most unusual increases he had witnessed in over three decades of box office tracking, as noted in comments to Variety.

The momentum continued unabated. ‘Obsession’ surpassed the inflation-adjusted earnings of ‘The Blair Witch Project,’ overtook William Friedkin’s ‘The Exorcist’ as one of horror’s top earners, and ultimately claimed the title of the highest-grossing original horror movie of the century. Remarkably, it also became the first film with a production budget under a million dollars to cross the $200 million threshold this century.

The film’s audience reception has been equally crucial to its sustained success and cultural impact. ‘Obsession’ boasts an impressive 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore, a rare combination for horror that has fueled ongoing word-of-mouth support well beyond its opening weekend. This level of acclaim also places it among a select few horror films to achieve an A- or higher on CinemaScore since 2019.

With its global earnings surpassing $440 million and inching closer to the $500 million mark, ‘Obsession’ now stands among horror’s all-time top earners, a category typically dominated by high-budget studio productions and established franchises rather than scrappy, first-time directorial ventures. Achieving this milestone would place Barker’s film in direct competition with modern horror’s biggest blockbusters, marking a remarkable outcome for a project that began as a low-budget passion endeavor.

This success has ignited broader discussions within the industry about the emergence of young, internet-savvy filmmakers making their mark in Hollywood, with Barker’s journey drawing parallels to fellow breakout director Kane Parsons, whose own YouTube-originated horror hit ‘Backrooms’ has followed a similarly surprising trajectory this year.

Regardless of whether ‘Obsession’ ultimately reaches the half-billion-dollar milestone, its journey has already transformed the landscape for original horror films in an industry increasingly dominated by sequels and franchises.
