Breakout stardom often arrives at a rapid pace, and Inde Navarrette’s summer has exemplified this perfectly. After captivating audiences in one of the year’s biggest surprise horror hits, the actress has spent the last few months building an impressive lineup that would make even seasoned Hollywood veterans envious.

Navarrette first gained recognition for her role in ‘Obsession,’ Focus Features’ highest-grossing film ever, which has grossed over $224 million worldwide. She has recently secured the highly sought-after role of Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot. This momentum has now propelled her into an entirely new genre, inspired by a real-world phenomenon that many might not consider for a film.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Navarrette has been cast as the lead in ‘The Waffle House Index,’ a sci-fi thriller recently acquired by Apple Original Films. In addition to her starring role, she will also serve as an executive producer on the project.

The film’s title refers to an informal measurement used to assess hurricane severity based on whether local Waffle House locations remain open during storms. According to Bloody Disgusting, the restaurant chain’s website explains this system: green indicates the restaurant is serving a full menu and damage is minimal, yellow signifies a limited menu operating on generator power, and red means the location has closed due to severe damage or unsafe conditions.

Written by Andrew Nunnelly and featured on the 2025 Black List, the script centers on a Waffle House waitress whose challenging night shift spirals out of control. As reported by Deadline, the story kicks off when a stranger with a gun enters during her shift, leading to escalating chaos involving a mass flood, killer crocodiles, a nuclear explosion, a magical bunker beneath the restaurant, and ultimately, aliens.

This escalating chaos gives the film a unique tonal identity, combining grounded Southern disaster-movie elements with increasingly absurd genre twists. Louis Paxton, known for the 2026 Sundance NEXT Innovator Award-winning ‘The Incomer,’ is set to direct the project.

‘The Waffle House Index’ represents the latest collaboration between Apple and Plan B, the production company led by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner. As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Plan B was also behind Pitt’s racing drama ‘F1’ and recently produced the horror film ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,’ while gearing up for Sarah Polley’s upcoming drama ‘The Bell Jar.’

This partnership underscores Apple’s ongoing investment in genre-bending original films, providing Navarrette with a prominent platform to showcase her versatility beyond her breakout horror role. With full plot details still largely under wraps beyond the Black List logline, anticipation is expected to grow as more information about the production is revealed.

Navarrette’s career trajectory has accelerated impressively since her debut as Estela De La Cruz in the fourth and final season of Netflix’s ’13 Reasons Why,’ followed by a role on the CW’s ‘Superman & Lois.’ With her casting in ‘X-Men’ and now this Apple thriller, the actress has firmly established herself as one of the industry’s most sought-after rising talents this year.

With ‘The Waffle House Index’ adding yet another eclectic project to her rapidly expanding résumé, Navarrette’s ability to balance blockbuster franchise work with genre-bending original films suggests that her breakout moment is just the beginning.
