‘Obsession’ Surpasses $500 Million With Just a $750,000 Budget
Every so often, a low-budget passion project surprises the film industry and reshapes the expectations of box office success. Horror has long been a fertile ground for these underdog tales, from found-footage classics to viral sensations that unexpectedly make their way to countless theaters.
‘Obsession‘ has emerged as the latest, and arguably most remarkable, example of this trend. Written and directed by YouTube filmmaker Curry Barker, this twisted horror-romance has spent recent months quietly shattering box office expectations, reaching milestone after milestone.
The film has officially crossed an astonishing $500 million globally, a figure that becomes almost unfathomable when considering its production budget of just $750,000. This impressive gap places ‘Obsession’ among the most extreme budget-to-box-office ratios in cinema history, having already returned over 600 times its original cost.
The narrative follows Bear, portrayed by Michael Johnston, whose obsession with winning the love of Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, leads to a series of deadly and unintended consequences. The cast also includes Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter, all under Barker’s uniquely grisly and darkly comedic direction.
‘Obsession’ premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section in September 2025, where it was acquired by Focus Features and Blumhouse for approximately $15 million, making it the highest-grossing film festival acquisition of all time. This acquisition signaled early confidence in the film’s potential, but few could have anticipated just how far it would ultimately go.
When it opened in U.S. theaters on May 15, 2026, ‘Obsession’ debuted with a surprising $17.1 million from 3,016 North American theaters, quickly becoming Focus Features’ highest-grossing release. From that point, the film’s momentum never really waned, steadily surpassing major milestones on its journey to the half-billion mark.

Throughout its run, ‘Obsession’ also became the highest-grossing horror film of 2026 worldwide, surpassing other genre hits like ‘Backrooms’ and briefly holding the title of the most profitable movie ever made based on its budget-to-gross ratio. Although that title has since been claimed by an ultra-low-budget Chinese animated film, ‘Obsession’ remains in a league of its own among mainstream theatrical releases.
The scale of ‘Obsession’s’ success becomes even more apparent when compared to other legendary low-budget horror triumphs. ‘Paranormal Activity’ turned a $15,000 budget into $193 million worldwide, while ‘The Blair Witch Project’ transformed a roughly $60,000 budget into $248 million. ‘Obsession’s’ $750,000 budget is significantly larger than either of those benchmarks, yet its box office earnings now dwarf both combined.
Even recent big-budget horror hits pale in comparison by percentage return. 2025’s ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ earned nearly $500 million, but it did so on a $55 million budget, a figure roughly 73 times larger than what ‘Obsession’ spent to achieve a similar result.
With its worldwide total continuing to rise, ‘Obsession’ has solidified its place as one of the defining box office stories of 2026, reaffirming that horror remains one of the few genres where a small, scrappy production can compete with, and even outshine, films backed by massive studio budgets. For an industry constantly on the lookout for the next breakout hit, Barker’s film serves as a powerful reminder that a strong concept can still triumph over a big budget.
