‘Onslaught’ Is A24’s Latest Sci-Fi Gamble With Strong Early Reviews
A24 has established a reputation for producing genre films that defy conventional Hollywood norms, and its upcoming release fully embraces this identity. The studio has been unveiling increasingly chaotic trailers for a project that seamlessly merges survival horror, sci-fi, and pure action into one relentless experience.
This film is ‘Onslaught’, directed by Adam Wingard and penned by his longtime collaborator Simon Barrett, the duo behind ‘You’re Next’ and ‘The Guest’. Wingard has described this project as an unofficial conclusion to a loose trilogy alongside those earlier films, sharing the same universe and expanding on concepts introduced in ‘The Guest’, while clarifying that it isn’t a direct sequel featuring the same characters.
Ahead of its release, ‘Onslaught’ has already garnered impressive reviews, currently boasting a 79 percent rating on the Tomatometer from nineteen critic reviews. This strong early performance for a genre film centered around wild action and horror elements suggests that Wingard’s unique blend of tones is resonating with critics as the film approaches its wide theatrical debut.

The story centers around Adria Arjona, who plays Celeste, a former Army sniper striving to raise her young daughter in a secluded desert trailer park. Their fragile peace is shattered when a classified military experiment goes horribly wrong, releasing a trio of genetically engineered super soldiers, known as Crybaby, Cockroach, and The Butcher, who escape from a secret facility and threaten everything Celeste has worked to build.
Arjona is joined by a talented ensemble cast that includes Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Drew Starkey, Michael Biehn, Eric Wareheim, Reginald VelJohnson, and UFC fighter Alex Pereira. This mix of seasoned genre veterans and fresh faces allows ‘Onslaught’ to balance its horror-infused action with the grounded family dynamics at the film’s core.
The film’s marketing has heavily emphasized its unhinged tone, with trailers featuring explosive gunfights, intense hand-to-hand combat, and large-scale destruction as Celeste’s quiet desert life collides with the escaped super soldiers. Early footage has also hinted at ominous military activity looming over the area, building suspense around what the government facility was concealing.
‘Onslaught’ is set to open exclusively in theaters and IMAX on September 4, coinciding with a notably crowded late-summer release weekend, featuring approximately eleven other films debuting the same day. As a theatrical A24 release, there will be no day-and-date streaming option, meaning fans must catch it on the big screen before any eventual digital rollout.
With strong critical buzz already building and a marketing campaign that fully embraces its chaotic premise, ‘Onslaught’ appears poised to be one of A24’s most ambitious action ventures yet.
