Recent rumors revealed some interesting original plans for how Doctor Who Season 2 with Ncuti Gatwa was going to end, but things changed along the way. According to reports from Daniel Richtman, the season was supposed to close with a big surprise involving Susan, a classic character and the Doctor’s granddaughter.

In the original version of the ending, Susan would have shown up during the party scene that the Doctor and the others were attending. She would have been wearing a grey trench coat, similar to her look in The Five Doctors special.

But the real twist was that she wouldn’t be alone. She was going to be standing beside Poppy.

Then, just before the credits rolled, Susan would turn to Poppy and say, “Let’s go, Mum.” That line would have revealed something big about their connection and set up a major storyline for the next season.

The plan was to explore this new story in Season 3, but that changed when the future of the show shifted. Season 3 wasn’t going to happen as originally planned, and showrunner Russell T Davies decided it was better to wrap up the Poppy storyline instead of leaving it hanging for another Doctor to deal with later.

Earlier in the season, there were hints that Susan might come back. The Doctor told Ruby that he used to live in Shoreditch in 1963 with his granddaughter Susan. This is where Doctor Who first started back in the 1960s, which made fans even more hopeful.

Many people thought the character Susan Triad, played by Susan Twist, might be the Doctor’s long-lost granddaughter. But it turns out she isn’t. Instead, she’s connected to the villain Sutekh. He even mocks the Doctor by saying, “Did you think I was family, Doctor? I bring Sutekh’s gift of death for you and for all your tiny, vile, incessant universe.”

So, the surprise appearance by Susan and the mother-daughter reveal didn’t make it into the final version. Instead, the show focused on giving closure to Poppy’s arc. While fans didn’t get that cliffhanger moment, it sounds like it was a creative choice made to keep the story tight and respectful to the characters.

Ncuti Gatwa has left Doctor Who after finishing his time as the Fifteenth Doctor in the Season 2 finale. He was on the show for two full seasons and also appeared in two specials.

What’s surprising is who will be taking over the role. Billie Piper, who played Rose Tyler in the earlier seasons alongside the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors, is returning to the series. It looks like she could be the new Doctor, the Sixteenth one, but Doctor Who often plays with time and rules, so it’s not 100% clear yet.

Piper shared how happy she is to return, saying, “It’s no secret how much I love this show… to step back on that TARDIS one more time was just something I couldn’t refuse.” But she didn’t give any hints about exactly what her role will be.

Showrunner Russell T Davies also kept things vague but said, “Billie once changed the whole of television, back in 2005, and now she’s done it again!”
